Liven up your journal writing program with Tic-Tac-Toe choice grids. This download has 28 different choice grids (252 prompts in all), enough for the whole year.
Each week, students choose three of the nine prompts to write about. If your students journal five days each week, you could use the Tic-Tac-Toe prompts for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and have them write about whatever they choose on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Tic-Tac-Toe format offers several advantages:
-Nine options is enough so that students feel like they have some choice about what they write about without feeling overwhelmed with a huge list of possibilities.
-Because they choose three prompts in a row, students must make choices, weighing one prompt against another. A student may very well find that in order to choose the prompt he most wants, he must also complete an prompt that he will find more challenging. However, that more challenging prompt is likely to be met with less resistance than if there was no choice and no more motivating prompt to go with it.
-Since each student is only required to complete three of the nine prompts each week, you could use the remaining prompts for extra credit.
-More variety each week (than a single daily prompt you put on the board) means more interesting sharing, if you have students read entries aloud and more interesting reading for you when you check their entries.
