Here are 117 holiday and seasonal journal prompts arranged in 13 grids of nine prompts each to make a Tic-Tac-Toe format. These are meant to be used at specific times of the year. Students choose three of the nine prompts to write about at the start of the week. If your students journal five days each week, you could use the Tic-Tac-Toe prompts for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and have them write about whatever they choose on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Because they choose three prompts in a row, students must make choices, weighing one prompt against another. A student may very well find that in order to choose the prompt he most wants, he must also complete an prompt that he will find more challenging. However, that more challenging prompt is likely to be met with less resistance than if there was no choice and no more motivating prompt to go with it.

Journaling is something I haven't done too much of this year. My topics seemed bland, so we didn't stick with it. I love the tic-tac-toe format where they can choose. These seasonal ones will go nicely with the other tic-tac-toe prompts of yours I've already picked up!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Subject Area:
Most of my teaching experience is with gifted and talented students in grades 2-4, though I have worked with children of all ages in general education classrooms as well. A few years ago I stopped teaching in order to write nonfiction children's books full time. Gradually over the last couple of years, my career has switched from writing to creating teaching materials here on Teacher Pay Teacher. I love creating teaching products (most recently task cards) and feel just as passionate about my work now as I did when I was teaching. I also love knowing that my products help thousands of teachers and reach tens of thousands of students.
