Step into a time machine! Created as an introduction to the time period when Mary McLeod Bethune grew up, this glimpse into 1880 would be great for anyone studying reconstruction or anything else about the late 1800's. This gives students real life connections that they don't always understand in our current world, such as a lack of technology and the difference in gender roles. It also touches on women's suffrage and civil rights. Let your students step into the time machine and experience 1880 in a way they are sure to remember. Tested with real students in the classroom of Heidi Raki.

I currently teach first grade at an American School in Casablanca, Morocco. Previously, I taught all grade levels in the computer lab at a Title I school in Georgia. I have also taught 3rd grade for 4 years. I student-taught in 3rd grade and Kindergartden. I have taught both high income and low-income school students, and find that no matter where I teach, most kids need to look at every problem from 12 different angles. Although it is challenging, it is also incredibly rewarding.
