This 148 page resource for teaching Ben Mikaelsen's popular novel has eight different components.
(1)Detailed CHAPTER SUMMARIES, written in bulleted format for easy reference, provide a quick method for becoming familiar with the material when time is limited and for refreshing memory when using the novel from year to year.
(2)PREREADING ACTIVITIES include a graphic organizer, discussion and research topics, and a bulletin board idea.
(3)The VOCABULARY section begins with an alphabetized list of all words targeted for study with page numbers, and continues with book order word lists with definitions, interpretive dictionary activities, and usage worksheets. A study of FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE lifted from the story is also included in this section.
(4)The chapter-by-chapter SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS can be put to use in a variety of ways including homework reading guides. The questions require detailed, FACTUAL responses.
(5)OBJECTIVE TESTS, which cover the novel as chapter-by-chapter quizzes and as a whole book test. These tests DO NOT REQUIRE STORY INTERPRETATION, but they do check for story comprehension and require students to read carefully and thoroughly for FACTUAL CONTENT. The goal of this component is to build a strong foundation for progression to the higher level thinking skills.
(6)THINK, WRITE, CREATE, organizes as both chapter-by-chapter and whole book activities, require students to engage the HIGHER LEVEL THINKING SKILLS of Bloom's Taxonomy. These open-ended activities cover a range of difficulties from basic to challenges for gifted students.
(7)The GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS are based on specific novel events or characters rather than a standard design. Each one offers opportunities for practicing and improving writing skills.
(8)Full ANSWER KEYS, including short answer questions and some open-ended questions, are included.

This novel study was one of the best products I have used in 32 years of teaching! My students learned so much from the book and I used a variety of your project ideas as well! TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Immediately after graduating from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1965 with a degree in high school business education, I touched ground and taxied into a self-contained elementary classroom filled to the brim with 38 eighth graders. Not the place I had planned to spend the next thirty years, but unwittingly, I landed where I belonged! Most of my thirty years in education were spent living happily in the delightful, chaotic, but always interesting world of sixth, seventh, and eight graders. For three of those years I served as a facilitator for gifted education in twelve elementary schools, where I worked with fourth, fifth, and sixth graders and dozens of teachers. During the last phase of my career, I traveled to schools throughout western North Carolina and presented workshops based on a program for teaching composition skills that I authored and used in my classroom. In 1997, after retiring from the classroom, I founded Taking Grades Publishing Company and began a second career writing teaching materials for middle grade language arts teachers. The company has enjoyed steady growth and can now claim customers in all fifty states, several Canadian provinces, and even Taiwan! Joining the TeachersPayTeachers team in November 2008 was the beginning of my third career in education. Once a teacher. Always a teacher!
