Teaching the transcendentalist philosophies of the Romantic Period can be a daunting task. This mini-unit will introduce students to the big ideas of the movement without taking up too much class time or bogging students down with a lot of literature. Using just selections from "Self-Reliance" by Emerson and "Walden" by Thoreau, students will complete an introductory, pre-reading, and review activity before taking a test (objective with one extended response/ essay question). This unit worked incredibly well with my students, my desired pacing and my curriculum. The teaching notes and agenda were clear and easy-to-follow. Thank you for including these!!! They made my life a lot simpler. The students LOVED the Bon Jovi 3-column chart. I played the song with a youtube video that displayed the lyrics. It just happened to be a day when a student teacher from another department asked to come visit my class; she loved it as well! I paired your unit with two other purchases from this site - one on Dead Poets Society and a beautiful PowerPoint presentation. It was a huge success. With all three, the Transcendentalism "month" proved to be one of the best, most meaningful units of the entire year.

I believe there is a key provided. The first answer sheet has the answers to the right of the provided blanks, and the second answer sheet is blank so that the teacher can simply photocopy it. I'm glad your students enjoyed the unit! Thanks for the feedback.
