Product Questions & Answers

On  September 30, 2012,  Sandra S. asked:
I just downloaded Treasures Grade 1 Unit 1 Word Study Activities Common Core Aligned and I am a bit confused. I have several questions I am hoping you can answer. I looked at the words of the week for the last week-Soccer and I am not sure if the students are to use the letters to make these words. The letters that are given for Soccer do not seem to match any of the words on the word list or sight words you have listed on the refrigerator list. When we do word study, the words follow some type of pattern. We use Patricia Cunningham. Do you just give the letters to the students and tell them make words? Also, I noticed in your word cards you have words with the ow chunk and ink, which has not been covered yet in Treasures up to this point. I am also confused about the transfer words. Sorry for all the questions, but I was hoping to use this starting tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Good question. Thank you for asking. The words of the week are what I use for spelling, reading and writing. The phonics on the left correlate to those words so I work on those sounds during the week. The making words letters I use to help them apply any of the phonics that they have already learned to make words. I do this whole group for about two quarters and some years I do them whole group all year. This is the common core piece of word study. Students need to use what they have already learned to make words. Words come in many patterns as you know, however, there is not much thought to making words with generalized patterns. They have to think in many more steps to make words. Should they use a digraph or vowel team, apply a silent e, or make cvc words? I am always challenging them to think higher. When I do this whole group, the students cut out the letters and move them around to make words. When a student has made a word, they raise their hand, share their word with the class and I have a blank template under my document camera and they write their word for the class. The rest of the students write that word, too. Then I call on other students until all 15 words are made. The transfer words are the 3 boxes on the bottom. I ask for volunteers to choose a word we have already made, change the beginning, middle or ending sound to make a new word. It is another way they have to think about how word patterns work. The letters make a big word that relate to the story. The word cards follow the refrigerator list and they need to practice reading those words in isolation with a partner at least once a day. I accelerate the phonics so I move faster than Treasures. The phonics match the words. If you notice I combine the spelling words that Treasures uses with the sight word/vocabulary words because I feel the students need a balance of both to become effective readers and writers. I hope I answered your questions. If you have any more, please feel free to email me at jogino@peoriaud.k12.az.us. I check it everyday, even on the weekends. I will help you as much as I can.
