Trick or Treat Book Reports and Pumpkin Projects will be the highlight of all fall activities in your classroom. Everything you need to get this project up and running is included in this unit. I have created the initial parent letter and poem that will get your parents enthused about their part at home. Then I have created four book report formats: K-1 Color Copies, K-1 Black and White Copies, 2-6 Color Copies and 2-6 Black and White Copies. Each book report section contains a parent letter, direction sheet, rubric, and element treat cards. 2-6 has an additional first draft section since their book report requires writing. Take a look at the preview or stop by my blog: www.shenanigansinsecond for addition information and pictures.

I was wondering what the difference was between your pumpkin biographies & pumpkin book reports before I purchase one. Is it fiction vs. non-fiction? I was looking at the pictures & the pumpkins on the biographies page look like characters from books. Just checking!

You are exactly right! :) The pumpkin book reports are for fiction stories and studying the plot of fiction. The biography unit is nonfiction and focuses on the students writing biographies of famous people! :)

Hi Hope,

I was wondering if you have a parent volunteer letter that you send out for the pumpkin decorating day. If so, I would love to have if if you don't mind sharing.

Thanks!

Thank you! I just was unsure.... I liked the poster you did along with it so wanted to double check. So the treat back is the cover with the candy elements inside.

I am using this with 6th-8th grade so trying to adapt it a bit.

Exactly! The year before, I had the students create a retelling on a poster. Then I decided to use the treat bags instead! :)

I purchased Trick or Treat Pumpkin Book report and it will not down load. My computer keeps timing out. this was 8 dollars which was a lot of money not to be able to down load it. Any advice as to why I can't download? Has anyone else had this problem? If it can't be fixed, can I get a refund?

This looks great! The "End" and candy apple graphic (can't remember the heading-sorry) aren't in black and white in the black and white section...they are still colour. I am hoping to use the black and white version with my grade 2s. I think the "End" graphic is candy corn.
I am really excited about this project. A mom is donating enough mini pumpkins for each student to have two. I can't wait to start!

Those graphics were not created to be black and white and so I had to use them in color. You can always choose to print those in grayscale which is what I usually do before I make copies! :)

I bought this activity and can't wait to do it this year! Initially I was planning on having the kids do it at home and then have them bring it now. Then I read how you have much better success if they do it in class so I may do that now. Could you let me know what types of items you have available for them to use for their creations? I like the idea of a $2 donation but also want to make sure I would purchase things that would be useful for the pumpkins.

Thank you!

I typically use any craft supplies that we have in the classroom. Googly eyes, yarn, bulletin board paper, construction paper, felt, pom poms...you name it! Hope this helps!

Hi Hope, I'm assuming that I can make changes to the pdf files once I purchase them? They aren't a read only file, right?

Hi Hope, I really blew it. I thought I was purchasing your pumpkin book report but ended up with your biograp one. I looked at the pictures and just asumed I was getting the book report one and didn't realize you had two different ones, a biography and a book report. I just thought by "biography" you meant of a character in the story. It was confusing because I didn't know you had two. Now that I have downloaded the biography, I can see that I didn't get what I thought I was getting. I really don't want to spend another $8.00. Did anyone else get confused like I did????

Hi! I am so excited to start this project with my kids, but I will need to send parent letters to translation services...I also need to change a few things in the letter. Is there any way I would be able to get an editable version? Thanks!

I am so sorry, but this unit is not editable at this time! I can't send the file out due to TOU's by the graphic companies from which I purchase my clipart and papers! Sorry! :(

Love this idea and extremely excited to try it! I want to change a few things to help it better fit into my classroom. I was wondering if there is anyway I can edit the text in the parent note?

Hope, I just bought this project and I love it! I am a librarian and I plan to use this in October with my book club (4th/5th graders) and display the pumpkins at our fall festival. Do you have a grading rubric for the pumpkin project? I saw the rubric for the trick or treat reports, but was wondering if you had an instruction sheet or rubric for the pumpkin project.
Thanks! My email is: karen.weaver@frco.k12.va.us

Hello!
These are wonderful! I, too, did what Gina did and assumed the book reports came with the biographies. I teach first grade and would very much appreciate it if you could send me the book report details as well! Thanks!

Hi Hope,
I fell in love with the pumpkin book reports!! I purchased the biography unit thinking it was all together. Is there anyway you send me the book report instead? I teach second grade and was on using it next month. Thank you :)

I too am thinking of having my kiddos assemble their pumpkins at home....did you have the kids bring materials for their pumpkin or just the pumpkin? I know I don't have enough paint or craft supplies to be able to help them out at school!

One more question...do students pick their book at school and tell you before you send anything? Or do they pick it out with their parents?

My kids just brought in the pumpkin. I just used paints that I already had in my room from other projects. However, you could request $2.00 in addition to the pumpkin to cover the cost of supplies.

They definitely pick their book at school so that we can make sure it is a "just right" book. I want for the project to be meaningful, so I make sure that this is a book that they can read and comprehend independently. Once they have their book, we put it in the pack along with all of the other materials. I would love to see your pumpkins once they are finished!!! :)

I would like my 2nd graders to create their pumpkin character at home and bring it in to school to share along with the book report. Can you help me with a parent letter for the pumpkin part? I know that you said that you paint the pumpkins in school...what instructions do you give your parent volunteers?

You may want to have the kids draw their pumpkin at school and then parents can replicate it at home! That is always a great strategy. Push pins also work wonders if you do not have hot glue at home! Other than that, they can go to town with whatever supplies they like! :)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Grades Taught:
Subject Area:

During my short teaching career, I have never stayed in one place too long! :) I've been teaching for six years - 4 years in 1st grade,1 year in 2nd, and have now moved on to 3rd grade just this year. Looping has presented many challenges, but I have enjoyed all of the wonderful experiences that this model of teaching can offer. I adore my job and am always looking for ways to improve my instruction in the classroom. I have quickly learned that when you make learning magical, that is when it truly sticks for the "long haul". I enjoy creating resources that bring learning to life in my classroom, and I am so excited to be able to offer a little piece of that to you here on TPT. Happy Teaching! :)
