This packet explains two methods for prime factorization--The ‘tree method’ works from the top down and focuses on factors. The ‘birthday cake method’ works from the bottom up and focuses on division.

The tree method is most widely taught and used. It is the way you and your parents will be most familiar with. I have found, however, that the ‘birthday cake method’, while not as widely used, seems to be the method my students prefer and have the most success with.

I have created a packet that will provide you with the necessary resources, regardless of which method you decide to use with your students,

Included in this packet are two matchbook foldables--one for each method, a mini-book for each method and a two-sided practice page for each method. Detailed answer keys for practice pages and both mini-books are included as well.

Before purchasing, please visit Mrs. B's Best Blog for pictures of the product. Also, if you are not familiar with how to assemble an 8 page mini-book please watch the following video .

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Grades Taught:

Hello! I am currently in my 24th year of teaching. Thirteen of those years were spent teaching first grade and one year teaching kindergarten. For the past 9 years, I have taught 5th grade. While there are many things I miss about working with 'the little ones' in the primary grades, I have to say I have really found great satisfaction in working with older students. While teaching reading is a great passion of mine, I have found myself teaching math the past four years. That's just how it goes in education sometimes :) I am slowly finding that a have a passion for math as well. Who knew! No matter what grade level or subject I find myself teaching, I have always enjoyed using technology to make my life easier. I enjoy sharing those various items I've created with other teachers.
