US HISTORY: FALL SEMESTER ONE READING QUIZZES/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
35 Reading quizzes or classroom discussion questions for the US History Teacher. My philosophy regarding reading quizzes is the more the better. I assign a small section of reading the night before each class meeting. One of the key skills I hope to impart to my students is how to read with a purpose. Therefore my reading quizzes are extremely difficult but they are also open note. They are simple to grade as the answer is either there from the notes or it is not. The students who read and take notes pass the quiz, the students who do not score poorly which makes it easy to identify an intervention. Also, I tend to differentiate the purpose of the quiz. The following quizzes are structured much like a body paragraph in a historical essay might appear except with direct prompts that direct students to follow a structure. This also allows me to rate the quiz for quality of use of evidence and original thought. I score these quizzes as six points, two points for each section answered. If section is complete, uses complete sentences, and uses specific evidence and has thoughtful analysis, then the student receives full credit for each answer. I deduct usually one point for scant or general use of evidence and weak or undeveloped analysis. Wrong answers or answers that are off topic get zero points. These quizzes follow the page sets for the textbook American Journey by Pearson Prentice Hall but can be adapted to any textbook content pages, just cut and paste where needed. Can also be used as classroom discussion questions to assess student understanding. Enjoy!
