This is a complete, student-centered novel study/literature response unit for Scott Westerfeld's novel "Uglies". Included are 57 pages of activities including "Check for Understanding" questions for each two-three chapters (answer keys included), writing assignments and engaging graphic organizers.
This novel study/literature response unit has been created to involve all aspects of reading including: comprehending, inferring, making connections, questioning, summarizing, evaluating and synthesizing. Additionally, several activities involve language usage.
Activities and graphic organizers include: "Check for Understanding" (for each two-three chapters), pre-reading activities, Internet research, personal dictionary, KWL chart, character attribute webs, making connections (text-to- world, text-to-text, text-to-self), drawing based on text description, Venn diagram, finding similes, writing a persuasive letter, identifying emotions, sequencing using a comic strip, using persuasive language to create an advertisement, identifying pros and cons, physical attribute web, character sketch, reading body language, sequencing and transition words, writing a newspaper article, finding adjectives and synonyms, story pyramid, timeline of events, write a book review, write a chapter and write an essay.
This novel study has been created so that teachers may pick and choose which activities to do, and when. Check for Understanding questions may be used for students to answer in writing, or alternatively they may simply be used as discussion questions. It is not recommended to have students do every single activity in this novel study.
