In this lesson, students are introduced to different world economic systems by creating their own "cowisms". Students have fun with the cartoons and the silliness, but in order to successfully complete the activity they must read, comprehend, summarize, explain, verbally and visually present their information to others. By the time they finish this activity, (45 minutes if students are on task), they will have key characteristics of seven different economic systems hard-wired into their brains, even if they have never heard of them before. This lesson can be used effectively in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade classrooms, depending on teacher preparation and classroom training in group work.
