By Emily Kissner. I created this presentation to help my fourth graders develop an understanding of figurative language, with an emphasis on similes, personification, and metaphors. This presentation emphasizes interpreting figurative language (What is the author trying to tell you about ___?) as opposed to just recognizing different forms. My students really enjoyed it, and the presentation was the springboard for some great discussions and a deeper understanding of figurative language.

I'm the author of two books for Heinemann: Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Retelling, and The Forest AND the Trees: Helping Readings Identify Important Details in Texts and Tests. Both books help teachers to figure out and meet the needs of their students. I have taught for thirteen years, working with seventh graders, sixth graders, and fourth graders.
