This is the type of lesson students will remember forever. It has worked well for every teacher that has tried it.
As students enter the classroom, they will receive an index card with a picture of a bird, squirrel, rabbit, porcupine, frog, or fish. Students will be grouped by the animal they chose.
Teacher will read "Terrible Things" (an allegory about the Holocaust) and students will react as their animal. After the teacher is finished reading the story, students will read the poem "First They Came for the Jews." Students will be amazed when they make the connection.
Finally students will create a skit in which they teach the lesson in a modern way. File includes detailed lesson plan, story graphic organizer, skit planning graphic organizer, comparing and contrasting graphic organizer (poem and story), and pictures of animals.
This is an awesome activity. I am using it with my 8th graders. They have never had an experience with the holocaust so this is a perfect way to expose them to it.
Used in my 6th grade Language arts classes as an initial introduction before starting a Holocaust novel -- GREAT resource!

I used a modified form of your lesson with a 6th grade class and 4 8th grade classes. I wish I'd had it BEFORE we started our Holocaust unit, but it was effective toward the end also.

Higher level thinking without realizing it--great for kids
I didn't see where to put the stops you speak of in the activity organizer, but I have been able to make some simple adjustments and will be using this as an intro activity to the novel "Anne Frank."
