This lesson teaches students in grades 3-4 how to use an index to locate information in a non-fiction book. The lesson also serves as a great refresher activity for students in upper grades. The subject matter is plants, so the lesson could be used in a science unit. However, the lesson is totally cross-curricular because it can be used as a language arts lesson and/or library research skills lesson. The lesson contains a sample index that can be distributed for each student or projected on a screen. In addition, the lesson contains a slide show that has questions for the students to answer from the index.
