This activity emphasizes elementary math concepts such as graphing, counting, addition, subtraction, greater than, less than, and comparing. It can be extended by adding shared writing and reading activities.
As Valentine's Day approaches, kids look forward to eating the candy conversation hearts that are ubiquitous during this season. This unit provides the teacher with an opportunity to put all that sugar to good use! Each student starts with their own supply of candy hearts. They sort them by color and record how many of each they have on their own personal graph. Students then record their winning color on a class graph. There are two worksheets - one for each graph - that require the students to count, compare, add, and subtract the number of each color. As the reward for completing the activity successfully, students are allowed to eat their candy hearts! A teacher's guide is included in this download.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Subject Area:
I taught for a total of 32 years, mostly in second grade. After getting my Masters in special education, I spent 5 years as an LD Resource teacher before returning to the regular classroom. I have taught third grade and a multi-age primary class as well.
