These are meaningful and personal activities that I created for my students because I never found an all inclusive published version. This 9 page packet includes: a survey for students to use to interview a veteran or someone who's lived during a war or conflict, a history of Veterans Day, lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner, and America the Beautiful, an excerpt of Thomas Paine's "Crisis", links to sites:Tom Brokaw's "Great Generation", Constitution, pictures of raising the United States flag at different historical events, re-enactment of Washington crossing the Delaware on the Washington Crossing, PA website, and tips for classroom activities.

I'm a teacher/author and offer K -12 Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, American History, Novel Packets, Grammar, Back to School, Holidays, Writing, Poetry, Spelling, Teacher forms products and more!

We were hit by Hurricane Sandy and the Nor'Easter blizzard otherwise I would have been able to add more activities to this packet. Hi Barbara,
Thank you for your comment. I've used the questionnaire for many years and have had very positive feedback from my students' parents. They especially love the fact that their kids sat down with older members of the family and actually talked about family history, etc.It's a document that will be kept for future generations. Many of the kids do video tapes and pretended they are news reporters. I play them in class. Those are very touching and become a big hit with all family members.If I can be of assistance in any way, please let me know.

Hi Stephanie! Thank you so much for your question. :) I was surprised when I saw third grade listed on the product description. I didn't include third grade but you never know with technical things what happens. That being said, I think all of your third graders would benefit from surveying family members or someone they know who was in the military. What I'd like to do is send you the whole packet for free and let you decide what you want to use. If you give me an email address, I'll send it. There's no way to do that on TpT. Sorry :( Send me another note here in the Q/A section. I LOVE doing this with my students and have had wonderful feedback from teachers and especially parents! Thanks for contacting me!

Hi Ruth,
I am looking into putting together a unit using Veteran's Day but incorporating reading and writing in my own way for my Gifted learners and mainstream kids. So, I'm actually wondering how much of this is reading comprehension type passages and how much of it are project-based items. How many items in this set include reading passages and or comprehension paragraphs? My basal does not have any such story about Veteran's Day and nor do places like Reading A-Z, where I normally get grade level quick reading material. Thanks!

Hi Carrie! Because it's Teacher Appreciation Day/week, I'll send it to you for free if you give me your email address. I have a one page sheet that describes what Veteran's Day is, the history of it and the differences between Veteran's Day and Memorial Day. There's also an excerpt from Thomas Paine's "The Crisis" ("These are the times that try men's souls.." I have the kids interpret the meaning of the excerpt. There's much more but too long to explain. Let me know if you want it. :)

I've been an elementary and middle school teacher for over 25 years in Connecticut. I also served on the Weekly Reader National Teacher Advisory Board as the Connecticut State Rep and appeared on "Good Morning, America" in 1993, to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Weekly Reader. I worked closely with the other state representatives and Weekly Reader's editorial, graphic arts and marketing departments. I was a NASA/Lockheed Martin Mission Systems "Student Signatures in Space" teacher for ten years. My students, Board of Ed, staff and others signed NASA posters that accompanied astronauts during space missions aboard the space shuttles. One of the posters was signed by all students in our school, teachers, parents and the Board of Ed. It returned from space, and was hung in the school's Media Center.
