This is a very unique approach to seeing how Vietnam's history has been heavily influenced by the political and military presence of China, France, Japan, and the United States. This lesson uses currency (and some coins) from Vietnam's past, dating from the 1300s, to have students analyze evidence of those countries' influence on Vietnam. (Some of the currency is Indochinese, since Vietnam was actually part of Indochina for many years.) The lesson file includes the following: (1) a detailed lesson plan, including an anticipatory activity, explanation on how to use the PowerPoint, and an assignment for creating a Vietnam timeline, (2) a 4-page document from the Library of Congress online documents (adapted to make it more student-friendly) in case your textbook does not have good Vietnam history information needed in order for the students to create the timeline, (3) a 23-slide PowerPoint guiding the students through analysis of 20 different Vietnamese bills and 3 coins, (4) an extra page with 6 MP certificates (which were supposed to only be used by U.S. soldiers on base, but actually circulated among local Vietnamese also).
