This is a checklist/rubric for weekly vocabulary assignments. I created the checklist using multiple evaluative criteria and based on the major reading standards for the eighth grade. The rubric contains four criteria; fluency, capitalization, grammar and word choice. Each of the criteria is broken down into several specific descriptors that were required to be ‘checked off’ by the students. I reviewed the checklist as a class with students and each student received their own copy. I encouraged them to check off each criterion as they completed their vocabulary assignment. When students are given clear, measurable objectives before an assessment and are able to apply their knowledge and skills to real life projects, brain based research has proved that student achievement will improve. Students will also be more motivated to achieve when daily assignments have real life implications, this checklist gives the students some control over the assessment and forces them to problem solve.
This checklist encourages student involvement in the learning process. All students have a clear, concrete picture of what their task is while using the checklist. This checklist allows students to become organized and active learners. It breaks down the learning process for them into smaller, more manageable pieces. The use of the rubric allows students to become independent learners; once they have clear expectations and materials in hand, reaching the goal is a clearly defined task.
