Ideal for vocabulary in any content area! This makes a great 5-minute sponge activity. Just type your list and Excel automatically generates a vocabulary puzzle. Each puzzle contains 9-25 squares. Every square has a vocabulary word or definition along each of the four sides, and students must match them up. A list of 50 words will create one large puzzle. I have added smaller puzzles to accomodate shorter lists. Any list can be shuffled to create multiple versions of a puzzle.

I have students put a color or pattern on the back of each puzzle and then cut apart the puzzles the first time we play, and we store them in envelopes. The pattern on the back allows for quicker identification of misplaced pieces.

This seems to be really hard. How long does it take a student to do this?

It takes some students longer than others. My high school students can do the 40-word version in 5-10 minutes.

I would like to be able to customize. Was I supposed to by a different version that is not protected?

You should be able to put your own vocabulary in the list and the puzzles will automatically update. Do you need to customize something else about the puzzle? I can send you an unprotected version if you like. Email me at Michelle.Jolley@rsd.edu

How do the students play the Vocabulary Matching puzzle. I've looked at it, but I am confused. It appears that one side matches the definition, but what do the students do?

Print out a puzzle and then cut it up. Shuffle the pieces and allow students to put them back together, matching words to their definitions. It's fun to time them as they compete against one another or against a previous "personal best" time.

I've been looking for a Vocab Matching/ Jigsaw program for years! I'm attempting to get my first puzzle up and running, but I can't seem to customize it so that the font is smaller to fit in the squares or increase the box size to fit the item. Is this possible? Also, I can't seem to get an error in a few boxes to go away "#REF!". Is there something I am missing?

Hi, Jenadia.

Whatever vocabulary you type in the vocabulary list will show up in the puzzles. Just replace the Spanish words with words from your list, and each of the different puzzles will update itself. You will need at least 18 words for the smallest puzzle, 32 for the medium sized one, and 50 for the big one. Please let me know if you have any trouble! I am committed to providing quality products and customer service! michelle.jolley@rsd.edu

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 23 years of experience in the classroom. I've taught Spanish most of my career, with a few years of Language Arts thrown in. I spent 13 years at the middle school level, and am in my 9th year at high school. I love both levels, and often can't believe how lucky I am to be in this profession. I taught a Spanish Teaching Methods course at BYU as an adjunct professor for two semesters, and loved that experience. When I retire from public school, my goal is to get a doctorate and start a second career at the university level.
