We all know the importance of teaching students vocabulary words! This is more important than ever, now that students are expected to read "complex texts proficiently and independently" by the end of the year. RL.10 and RIT.10 for every grade 2-5 in elementary school. Word knowledge gives students access to the text. Anchor standard 4, 5 and 6--the common core standards about author's craft and word choice, compel students to understanding why author's choose to use the words they do, and the Language Standards compel students to figure out unknown words using context and determine shades of meaning among similar meanings of the same word.

Use these rubrics with students to help them think about their thinking about their own understanding of unknown words. If you are using Vocabulary Notebooks in your classroom, these rubrics could be taped into each child's notebook. Also included are vocabulary recording templates for Vocabulary Notebooks (for each tier), a description of each of Marzano's 6-step process for Tier 3 content area vocabulary instruction, and the criteria for choosing tier 2 and tier 3 vocabulary words to teach. I have also added Vocabulary Graphs for students to keep track of their own vocabulary data (Vocabulary Graphs sold separately here)
