This is a study guide and answer key for the HBO films movie "Walkout" about the 1968 student walkouts in East L.A., a major event for the Chicano Movement. It is an excellent movie, and I use it in my American Studies class when we cover the Chicano Movement as part of our unit on the Civil Rights Movement. The kids love it because it is the true story of high school students who walked out of their schools in protest of the racial discrimination they faced. Very inspiring! The study guide consists of 10 short answer questions, as well as my answers / research. At the end I have provided the full text of the poem by Corky Gonzalez "I Am Joaquin" which is recited by one of the characters in the movie. The students take notes as they watch the film, then we discuss their answers and I fill them in on some of the details not apparent from the movie itself. Then we read through and analyze the poem. In order to create the blank handout for the students, just delete my answers. It is a great movie and it makes for some awesome discussions because they can all relate in one way or another. Prior to showing the movie, we also discuss the Mendez v. Westminster case, and how it influenced Brown v. Board of Education.
