This document uses a public domain text of about two pages from the most dramatic and famous scenes of Orson Welles' 1938 classic radio play to assess student understanding of elements of vocabulary, character motivation, drama terminology, and key lines found in a dramatic radio play. I use it along with the public domain broadcast of the "War of the Worlds" (1938) to teach about drama as a genre and specifically radio plays of the old days. In today's technological world it is a real challenge for students to rely on their sense of hearing alone to appreciate anything and this lesson helps demonstrate that and hopefully impress upon them how people entertained themselves before television, movies, and the internet took over the world. That aspect alone leads to great discussion points. A short quiz (with answer key) is provided at the end.
