Need to teach a unit on weather? Want to make it dynamic? Infuse technology - including real time data, GIS (geographic information systems) tools and JAVA applets?

This outline represents a several week unit (1-3 months) that can be infused into advanced middle school, motivated high school, or even college level programs. If any aspect after purchase needs further clarification, feel free to contact me! The program is certainly expandable or compressible.

The approach is inquiry based, student centered, and technology rich. My own students have enjoyed this unit when I have taught it.

Several of my other postings here can be used to support the unit - in some cases, you can purchase entire labs that include the use of Vernier probes in their instruction!

Hi Alan,
I just purchased the weather unit and a few other activities regarding Meteorology. I'm a first year teacher instructing a semester course on Meteorology as an elective for high school students. I started the course with current events (Hurricane Irene), but am now getting into the basics of the course and discussing the atmosphere and its layers. I was looking at your outline and wondered if there was any further instruction for the Lab investigation - flow of a fluid....or in which resource it could be found.

Thank you for your help in advance!

Melissa,

Honestly its been a while since I uploaded that file and I can't locate the original on my current computer (I'm sure it is on a backup drive *somewhere*. Would you be kind enough to copy and past to profsci@gmail.com the content you are asking about (flow of a fluid)? Also - great idea to start with current events; you may also find great value in sharing www.weatherbell.com - their home page has a great interactive tool that includes the ability to overlay tracks from all the models on tropical systems; additionally are you familiar with the weather underground? (wunderground.com). Contact me at profsci@gmail.com and I will attempt to help further.
