This writing assessment is to be used with whatever selection (fiction or expository) that your students have read during the week. I have found it to be an excellent tool for checking my students' true comprehension of text and their ability to write about that understanding. At the beginning of the year, it is necessary to walk your students through the activity.

it's a quick formative assessment type. includes choosing a character and describing the said character. the student must be prepared to cite 2 examples from the given text. then, the student is asked to give a 10-15 word concise summary. hope this helps you. i've found it to be a quick check on character development/summarizing.
