This four-page, three-part article provides tips and strategies to make the most of your reader's theater or classroom play activities. "Why Use Drama?" reveals some of the research about how the reader's theater model builds fluency and comprehension. Use it to defend against all the text-book pushers out there! "There's More Than One Way to Produce a Play" maps out six performance/production strategies. "The Delicate Nature of Assessing Drama" offers tips on teaching students to self-assess and discuss performance standards in a mature way. Based upon my twenty years of using drama in the classroom and fifteen years of writing read aloud plays for Scholastic. Also be sure to visit my website, ReadAloudPlays.com, for examples of plays produced as podcasts, movies, and stage productions.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Grades Taught:

I'm a National Board Certified teacher, a frequent contributor to Scholastic's Storyworks and Scope magazines, and the author of three books on education through Scholastic. I've developed a reputation for creating compelling read aloud plays based on African-American History, Civil Rights, and classic short stories. When not teaching the intermediate grades in southern Oregon, which I've done since 1993, I spend my time playing basketball, backpacking, and pestering kids. Contact me at lewis@jeffnet.org or visit one of my websites at www.MackLewis.com, ReadAloudPlays.com, or my public school site, dailyplatypus.com. Thanks!
