This tool is designed to help ESOL teachers make information about the students more readily available to the mainstream teacher and is intended to be used with the Access and W-APT tests and results. This tool allows for you to create an individual Can-Do sheet for each student, or you can create a Can-Do snapshot of an entire class!
In the first part of the tool, you will find the individual student profiles. The intention is for the ESOL teacher to be able to insert the student's name and scores, and then quickly copy-and-paste the can-do descriptors for that language function and level into the box. These sheets can be handed out to teachers or placed in portfolios or cumulative folders; however they are not intended as handouts for the student.
The last four pages of the tool allow you to create a full class snapshot for each language modality.
27 US states have adopted the WiDA standards along with the Access and W-APT tests for their ESOL framework. This item is not produced by or endorsed by WiDA, but it does include a copy of their can-do descriptors for grade cluster 1-2

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Before coming to Maryland, where I currently teach grades K-5, focusing mostly on 2nd and 4th, I was in North Carolina teaching ESL Language Arts primarily to grades 6-8. While working on my MS in ESL Education at the University of Tennessee, I did student teaching with grades K-8 in Sevierville, TN. I have also been invited to Busan, S. Korea, twice to conduct 2 week teacher training seminars on Content Based English Instruction for English language learners, and I am SIOP trained as well. In addition to my MS, I also have a degree in Spanish and Mass Communications.
