When students are learning to read, it is critical that they be able to identify and recognize the various chunks that letters and combinations of letters make in words while reading. This colorful set of 28 word chunks (also known as sound/spelling patterns or graphemes as they are called in Appendix A of the Common Core) created using a simple double bubble design that is pleasing to eye, works well to accomplish this teaching and learning task for both teachers and students. When using these word chunks bubble posters in your phonics and spelling instruction from week to week, students' awareness of word chunks will increase and giving them a 'shout-out' when they see them will be very gratifying to them (and you...because you know it's working, and they're getting it!) These wall posters are attractive and provide an anchor for word learning in your classroom.

The use of these word chunks in your phonics and spelling instruction (regardless of the phonics or spelling program you are currently using) correlates with the teaching and learning of Common Core Standards for K, 1 and 2 for Reading: Foundational Skills - Standard 3 "Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words."

This set includes the most common "graphemes" from the page 17 of Appendix A Common Core ELA: ay, sh, oo, ea, th, ch, ing, ee, ai, oa, oy, ur, or, ir, ar, wr, ou, ow, ey, wh, igh, ed, ck, ph, nk, dge, oi

Download the preview to see the actual size of the word chunk posters (several shown) and read more about how this product may be used with whichever spelling or word study program you are already using in your classroom. This file is an easy download that is a one 32-page pdf file document.

Hi Jen! I love your products and blog! I am a kindergarten teacher and would like your advice on which bubble set is most important for Kinder? The chunks or rimes? I would really appreciate your thoughts and guidance. I know that I should know the answer myself, but feel more comfortable hearing from you. Thanks!

Hi! That is a great question....even though rimes (or word families) involve combining two spelling patterns, whether it's a short vowel and and a consonant (ex: ip), or a long vowel pattern and a consonant (ex: ike), or a short vowel and an ending consonant blend (ex: ump), I would still recommend the rimes set as more foundational than Set 1 or 2 due the number of irregular consonant and vowel blends in those sets...which are appropriate for first grade. I hope that helps! Jen ❤

I think that's a great idea to add four per page.

Hi Jen,
I have bought both the word chunks (set 1) and rimes to use in my classroom. Would you be willing to create a medium size of the word chunks (four per page). I find this size quite handy as my display space is limited. It is also a good size for putting on a ring and using with a small group and one-on-one. I am also considering buying the second set of word chunks and would love the four per page size too.
Thanks, Linda lott@telus.net

I love this display. It is very bright and colourful. Would it be possible to create a set of chunks from the list of 37 most common rimes? I have been teaching these for many years. I also would like to see a version where four chunks or two chunks (mini size) fit on a page. My display space is limited. Thanks, Linda

Does this include any blank cards for adding your own chunks? My school uses Fundations so I would want to add other chunks based on that.

LOVE these! I know you are crazy busy right now, but down the road would you be able to make these in purple (lavendar/light) lime green, baby blue, pink, (pastels/neons)? Thank you!
