This printable is a WORD SPLASH graphic organizer for five elements of short story: character, setting, plot, theme, and conflict. The handout contains five circles- one for each short story element. Students must use the pictures and clues provided within and around each circle in order to determine which element of short story that circle represents.
Word Splashes are an excellent pre-reading strategy used to activate prior knowledge. Supported by research conducted by neuroscientist and educator J. Willis in her Research-based Strategies to Ignite Student Learning, this graphic organizer allows students to recognize, sort, and discover patterns by connecting material in meaningful relationships.
I have used this activity with my ninth grade English language Arts students and have found it to be a great warm-up for those at or above-level and slightly challenging for those below level. This graphic organizer also provides easy and efficient assessment to determine student understanding of the basic elements of short story.
