Word Wall Personal Spelling Card - A personal extension of your classroom word wall for each student. While conferencing with children on their writing folders, teachers or students can write the correct spelling of words they have misspelled repeatedly in their writing. That way, students can use the card as a reference the next time they choose to use that word. Phonetic spelling is an important component of young learner's writing, so be selective in the words you choose to add to their cards. We need to be careful not to discourage students from using phonetic spelling. However, although phonetic spelling is a very important part of childrens writing, experience has taught me that repeated misspellings of words can become imprinted into a child's visual memory. Be sure to congratulate a child's phonetic attempt before adding a new word to the card.
Prepare the card, printing it back to back with the first page on side one and the second page on side two. Each student's name can be written at the top. Students simply flip the card over for their words beginning with the second half of the alphabet. Use these cards throughout the year to make your students aware of the correct spelling of words they frequently use.
