Common expressions and words are often confused in speaking and writing, so I?ve developed a simple program for you to use with your students to help them practice proper usage for many of these confusing words.
The program is called Words of Confusion and it is for Windows PC only. Some of the common expressions often confused by students are Accuse and Allege, Adapt and Adopt, Advice and Advise, Affect and Effect, A While and Awhile, Among and Between.
Words of Confusion offers a study screen where students can view distinctions between the words and see real examples of usage. The study screen is available through out the game part of the program.
The game part of the program offers students example sentences with choices for the oft confusing expressions. They do a little bit of role playing in that they are addressed as an Editor of a small commercial magazine. They can read the sentences with two choices in each; they can try the sentence both ways with each choice entered separately, and they can make their final choice at the click of a button.
A running score is kept and the sentences are randomly repeated, so that the students can keep working at learning the proper usage.
