This is a resource that will help support any phonics program, but follows the sequence for the Within Words Spelling Pattern book in Words Their Way. We began using the program years ago, and the kids had a hard time finding the spelling patterns in text. I began writing stories to go along with the sorts, and created a format which worked well for our students. These 39 stories range from: long and short vowel patterns, to less common vowel patterns, to r-influenced vowel patterns, to dipthongs, and ending complex consonant clusters. Your students can use these as a follow up activity to your phonics/spelling lesson, or you can use as an assessment. These word hunts truly show if the child has grasped the spelling pattern that you have taught. Thank you so much for taking a look at this resource. Kari Redding :)

Can you tell me the exact WW sorts that are covered? One of the teachers at my school purchased one of your products with the Word Hunts and we love it but it doesn't cover all the WW sorts. And, are you doing any more for SJ?

I will have to look at home. I wrote one for each spelling pattern sort. In the LN book I couldn't write them for the picture sorts. So, not sure if that is the book you are referring to. I am working on S&A, but I know that I need to get them posted. Most are written, just not formatted to post. I promise I'll get to work on getting them posted! :)
Thanks for your question.

I just took a look. They are sorts #7-46. :)

These look pretty good. By chance do they come with the answers provided? I would like to know also do you have for the next book up the yellow one ?

That is a good idea... I never did make an answer key...
I have a lot of the syllables and affixes done, just not posted and not bundled. You are the 2nd person to ask today. Let me see how quickly I can put some starters up online. Thanks for pushing me to create more... I've needed it! :)

Do you know which version of Words Their Way you use? I have the 3rd edition. Are the words in your hunts different than the weekly tested words, but with the same pattern, or are they the words that are on the weekly test?

The books I used do not have an edition on them, but they were published in 04 or 06. I have seen the newer editions and the word sorts are the same the numbers are just off. I found they still followed the same order, but we're just slightly off in number. I chose any word in the sort that fit the spelling pattern skill. The weekly tested words played no factor in me choosing the word for the hunt. I believe the more practice the better! Our school found this extra practice extremely valuable in helping to support spelling patterns. Hope you enjoy them and they make your classroom life a little easier! Thanks so much for your purchase! Kari :)

Hi Kari, Just a quick question. I started going through the stories and doing the word hunt for the patterns and found more words than the number of blanks provided in the table. For example I was working on Sort 8 short I (CVC) and long i (CVCe). I found 20 different words that have the short i pattern CVC but there are not enough blanks for all the words. I found 8 different words with the long i pattern CVCe so they will all fit on the lines. There are other long I words but not with the CVCe pattern so I know the kids should not choose these even though they have the long i sound - just not the pattern that Sort 8 is teaching. Can you let me know if I am missing something when it comes to the short i sounding words . I really love the stories but want to make sure I am going to be instructing students correctly when it comes to identifying the words in the story and then writing them in the table. Thanks

Hi Julie! I really did not read that much into the sorts. When I give instructions for the word hunts, its basically just a way to make sure the kids understand the spelling patterns. Occasionally there will not be enough boxes, I either tried to keep it to 1 page (for copying purposes) or 2 pages when I needed more text as the skills got harder. You can either tell the children to write in the amount words for the boxes, or have them write extras on the side or the back... but for example, in Sort 8, the word TIME is listed a few places- I would only have the kids write it once. As for other long I words, you could either have them ignore them, or write the "ODDBALL" I words on the back. They are really just a general template for you to use to ensure that the children in your class understand the difference between Long and Short i. Hope that all makes sense, and please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Kari :)

Hi!
I am a year 4 teacher in Western Australia and am using the WTW spelling program in my class.
Just a quick question - in this pack, is there a word hunt for each sort in the Within Words Patterns book?

Confused with levels, stages, sorts!!

Thanks a lot

Yes, you could be using the more updated WTW books, in which case my #'s are off. They did a new revision of the program about 2 years ago and I have not had the opportunity to tailor my sorts to the new #'s, but there is a word hunt for each sort. I am on Spring Break, so I do not have access to my books where I looked at the alignment, but if you look at the first word hunt title, it will match up with a title in the new table of context, then the rest should fall into place. Hope that helps and please let me know if you need more clarification. I will be back at school tomorrow where I can look at the program if needed. Thanks so much for your purchase and I hope you find the activities helpful! Kari :)
