Looking for a way to spice up or energize your classroom word study?
My students begin their individualized Words-Their-Way word study sequence with a "blind" word search as their first activity (word search does not contain a list of words). This routine activity is meant to be an engaging, fun way for students to discover their word study words and sharpen their ability to recognize words that are spelled correctly (a major key to spelling improvement). Students also demonstrate their understanding of sorting by sound and/or pattern as they record the words they have found. Because of the reasons behind the creation of the word searches, you will not find lists included with the searches, but can find the list of words in the Words Their Way developmental word sort books. This set of word searches is based on the Within Word Pattern Spellers book (the yellow book).
This product is intended for teachers who use (or plan to use) Words Their Way word sorts. (The books are amazing for teachers who implement word study!)

Hi Katie, I have not created answer keys for the word searches. If you look under the title of each puzzle, it should say how many words are in the puzzle. If you have the yellow words their way sort book, that's where the lists came from. Hope this helps! Thanks!

Hi, I am not sure if others have had the same problem but the letters in the word search part are kind of hard to make out. The directions for the search are very clear, but the actual search is not. I'm not sure if it is the font or what. I've tried a couple things to see if I could make it better, but I can't. Any suggestions?

Hi, the word search is a snipped image from the word search program I used, so it's not possible for you to change the font or look of them. The image looks lighter on the computer, but if you print them off, they should be dark enough for student use. I am using this exact file in my classroom and students do not have trouble seeing the word searches clear enough to find the words. If I'm misunderstanding your issue, please let me know and I will see what I can do. Thanks for your purchase!

I absolutely love these word searches. They are great ways to reinforce each of the sorts. I do have one question for you, I am looking at Sort 42 and the word search does not seem to have the "ch" and "tch" words within it. Is there another version that will have those words within the word search?

Hi, thank you for so politely bringing this mistake to my attention. It looks like I copied the list for 41 again when I made puzzle 42. I corrected this for both versions of the WWP word searches. You should be able to re-download the product files for the correct version. Again, thank you so much for being so supportive and kind! We love the word searches in my class too! :)

I've used these for the first few weeks of within word lists, and find that most of the words listed are not included on the word search. Is this intentional? For example, cvce long/short 0 search contains only ose words for the long o.

Are you using the Within Word Pattern Spellers companions volume (it's a yellow book)? I used the second edition word lists to create the word searches. The actual Words Their Way book may have the lists more combined. I did not include the word lists in the product because I felt that was against copyright and that these word searches are meant to go along with the companion book's word lists. (The companion book I used is linked here: http://www.amazon.com/Words-Their-Way-Pattern-Spellers/dp/013514843X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347987851&sr=8-1&keywords=within+word+patterns). Please let me know if you are using this book and still do not feel the word searches match up or if there is anything else I can do. Thanks!
