On the Christianity power point, the Rutgers link does not seem to be working. Do you have another link that I should use instead?

Also, on the Islam powerpoint, you refer to a video link. Do you have the video link that you use for this particular part of the lesson. This is a wonderful set of lessons!
On  November 10, 2013Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
I'll work to change that link and to upload a corrected file, but in the meantime, here is an alternate link I like for all the facts on Christianity:

There are some great resources here. Lots of good information and some simple tasks to reinforce students learning. I did however find it quite difficult to follow the unit outline. Possibly number the files in the order they should be used would rectify this.

Regardless of this issue I am still looking forward to teaching this program!
On  January 30, 2013Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
Good idea! FYI - the titles of each ppt or activity should be the same as the daily lesson activity. That might help! Thanks again!

I did not find any links to video. The instructions and material do not provide any lecture notes.

The PPT's are very helpful.
On  July 17, 2012Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
I do not understand your comment or your rating. I wish you had contacted me prior to this rating for clarification if you were not finding the items. There are 5 sets of lecture notes with teacher guided notes at the bottom of each powerpoint slide. There are also daily lesson plans in the unit plan, outlining each days activities according to the activity titles. There are also links in the powerpoints to videos on the specific religions. You do have to be playing the powerpoints to be able to link to the videos (they will not play from the preview or edit screens).

On  January 15, 2014,  Holly S. asked:
I am wanting to do the Christianity brochure and the link provided is not working... do you have a another suggestions where students could find the information?
Thank you!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  January 15, 2014Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
There is actually not a link for students to use in creating the brochure; they can use the information gathered in the Ppt or from the other provided activities or you could have them use any classroom resource if you want something other than what is provided in the full unit. A textbook, encyclopedia, or religion book would have all this! It may be a good activity to take to the library to allow them to use different resources!
If you do want to use this as an online activity, the following website is very straight-forward with the information in a kid-friendly manner. http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/homework/religion/christian.htm
This site is also very complete, but has a bit more reading required: http://www.uri.org/kids/world_chri_basi.htm

Also... what do you have your students do with the Buddhism & Hinduism Puzzle Activity?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  January 6, 2014Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
It's a pdf file in the folder that is titled the same. I cut them up and have them put it all back together in the correct categories to review. It should really be titled "matching" rather than puzzle!

Yet again doing some more planning with your material and came across a question. Im looking at day five where you have written "Introduction to Hinduism Picture Analysis" and "United Nations Video" Is the picture analysis just part of your powerpoint? and what video are you showing this day? Do you own it or did you find it online?
Thanks again for all the help! :)
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  January 6, 2014Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
I reviewed the Hindu images and had the students analyze their significance, considering what they have learned about the other religions and their symbols.
The United Nations Video is at the UN website. They have quite a few really good videos you can show on religions and other geography topics around the world!

Hello again! I am planning some more lessons using this material and some more videos aren't working. What would you show in place of the one for Muhammad on the Islam ppt?
Thanks again for all the help! :)
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  January 3, 2014Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
I really like the PBS series on Islam. It includes segments on many aspects that you may want to show, and the beginning covers the life and significance of Muhammad. It is available on the PBS site or on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s59LfXGMyjY

Hope this works for you!

Thank you so much for being so helpful! I really really apprechiate it! I'm still a bit confused about the Classroom Judaism Comparasion. What exactly are you putting at each station? So far I understand that they review the ppt and the video in the ppt .. but when they go to rotate at the stations what will you have there for them.. if anything?
Thank you and I look forward to your other answers when you get the time.

On  December 18, 2013Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
The materials are the Comparison Class to Judaism ppt and there are 3 slides for each station, beginning with slides 2-4 on Monotheism. I then review the entire activity by flipping back through the ppt and having students share their comparisons with the class. I hope this helps to clarify!

Oh goodness .. it seems I'm going to have quite a bit of questions! So sorry! I'm trying to plan for when we come back after break! I'm looking at your activities on Christianity... and this link http://geneva.rutgers.edu/src/christianity/index.html doesn't seem to work for me. Does it for you? Is the website just down? Also do you have a set of world history atlas you use? I'm wondering if I can find some at the library... any suggestions? Our school is very short on supplies and I'm the only SS teacher for the middle school so I can borrow from someone else!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  December 17, 2013Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
Hello! I am working to address your questions, but I am in a location where I cannot get a good download signal to open the zip file. I can get to the library tomorrow to double check everything before I reply fully!
On the link, I think it must be the Rutgers server because I am getting a "too slow to open" error right now. The link should be good. If I cannot get it to open in the morning, I will find another that will work for you!

I had a set of 10 Nystrom World Atlases I used in my classes (we always grouped 3-4 to an atlas). I actually got my set from a library book sale for 10 cents each! :) You can also find them really cheap on Amazon if you are okay with the older editions (for ancient history, things have not changed!), but the shipping can add up.
I'll be in touch again in the morning!

Another question... I'm finding the judaism comparison a little confusing. Your notes say that they use the info from the ppt as well as the news report (what news report?) as well as what are you putting at each station? Maybe I am missing something and you could clear it up for me! Thank you!

The news report is the videos they would be viewing in the lecture/ppt instruction.

I quickly found this entire set of animated videos on the classic stories from the Bible and Jewish History. If you follow the link and then look to the right, you will see many to choose from. This will help until I can redo the links!

On  April 25, 2013Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
I set it as 7th grade and up because our state does not address the world history or religion components until 7th grade, but it would be very good to use with the 6th grade classes! I've even had feedback from a 5th grade teacher that used it with her GT kids. I hope it will work for you!

I am interested in purchasing this unit, but I was wondering if you could explain to me the difference between this unit and the World Religions Investigation Unit with the centers? Thank you!

On  February 11, 2013Michele Luck's Social Studies  answered:
This is the complete unit with lectures and other activities. The investigation centers is an activity that covers all the unit content, but one activity. It's great as an intro activity, a review, or as reinforcement.
If you have any other questions, please let me know! And I hope this has clarified it! :)

I was reading over this unit plan and was wondering what you did with the poem- The Blind Men & The Elephant? Did you just simply read the poem to your class? or what did you do that went along with the major religions?

I used it at the very beginning of the lesson along with online perspective drawings to introduce and lead a discussion on multiple perspectives. I found it to be a great lead before I started the lessons on the various religions and how people around the world view one another. Hope this helps!
