Combine cornstarch and water. Then, have students write about the concoction.

This lesson models how to create a graphic organizer by first writing the topic sentence and then writing the ending sentence. It adds some details in the middle - complete with a simile. It also stretches the topic/beginning thoughts into a strong first paragraph.

From here, the classroom teacher finishes the writing assignment by modeling writing aloud with his/her class. There are two examples of strong 4th grade writing (complete pieces) for students to compare to a 4 (advanced writing).

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am currently a 4th grade teacher in Nixa, MO, and I love it! I spent six of my 20 years in public education as an instructional specialist, but my passion is teaching students. In addition, I've worked with teachers at conferences and seminars in over 30 states since 2002.
