I am offering a list of tried and proven creative writing prompts. Every one of them has led to at least one fantastic final piece of writing by my high school students, and they all give students time to think, to play with words and ideas, and to generate possibilities. A few were borrowed and revised to fit my style and my students; most have been developed by me.
I use them in my 11th and 12th grade Creative Writing class as well as my core high school English classes (9th through 11th).
The list is organized based on the type of writing they best lend themselves to (memoir, fiction, poetry). Of course, they can be ‘mixed and matched’ in any way at all.
I have pulled six samples to show in the Free Demo, a couple from each of the three genres represented.

Help
I began my teaching career by substituting for three years while my own children were young. Then I had the opportunity to fill in for a year while the local high school drama teacher took a leave of absence. During that time I taught all drama classes and directed the school plays. My next position was Language Arts teacher in a high school. I taught there for eleven years. Along with core English classes, I taught numerous electives, advised the student newspaper staff and the literary/art magazine staff. I was also department chair. I then jumped into online teaching, which I have been doing for the past six years. I now teach online Language Arts classes to 7th through 12th grade students. I write online curriculum as well as teach.
