Included:

Writer's Workshop Framework Guide
Management ideas
Monthly overview
Mentor Text Lists
Detailed daily writer's workshop lessons
Anchor charts
Scoring Rubrics
and additional forms

These lessons will fit perfectly in your kindergarten classroom or for those 1st grade students who are new to writer's workshop.

Are these units designed for a specific grade because of standards or as a means to introduce formal writing? I am very interested in purchasing but can't convince myself to buy yet because I don't know how well matched the unit(s) will be for incoming first graders.

I'm a former classroom teacher now homeschooling my kindergartener. I haven't started writers workshop with her yet but she has been writing and drawing pictures in more of a reader response way. I really don't need a rubric, anchor charts, or management materials for a writing notebook. Would you suggest starting With unit 2? Thanks

I wnted to preview the unit before I bought more. My question about the other units is: is the standard that aligns with the Common Core for each lesson included?
Thank you

Hi Deanna,

I'm from Australia and I'm wanting to start your units with my prep students this year. When they come to me, most don't know any letters or sounds but by the end of the year they are writing sentences with many not needing me to scribe anymore. I am just wondering whether this unit would be appropriate for the beginning of the year? I only started writing workshop in my last few months of school last year and would love to start it from day 1 this year!

Thanks!

Absolutely! When we start this unit a lot of our students don't know their letters and sounds yet. These units take them through the progression of learning to write and it starts with, My Pictures Tell a Story. They learn that they can tell a story through their pictures and we work on labeling pictures, stretching out sounds to write words and learning how to write sentences. The units have a lot of anchor charts to help support the lessons that are provided. Thanks so much!

On day 2, you may want to change your spelling on What Do Authors Do? You don't need the apostrophe. Although it doesn't affect the fact that this is a great unit, I just thought maybe you'd want to know about the typo. :) Thanks.

Deanna, this is my first year using a writing workshop, and I have a few questions. Do you translate their words with your own writing on the paper? Do you have them start a new story if they finish before the workshop is over? When they edit a piece for publishing, do they use a new paper or make corrections on their old paper? I love this unit!

Deanna Jump  (TpT Seller)
Hi Kristi, Thanks so much for your compliment! I do not have my students start a new book in the middle of the workshop until they are scheduled to confer with me that day. When we go to publish, I do not have them rewrite.
I just ask that they go back and add clarification. That might mean adding more to their picture or adding some words to their sentences.

I've been using this with my first graders (almost all at a beginning kindergarten reading level). As we've been progressing and I've been looking at their writing, I've noticed that a lot of their "words" still consist of random letters (should this be expected??) and when asked to read the story back to me, some aren't able to do it! Any recommendations or a spot in the unit you think I should go back to? Thanks.

Deanna Jump  (TpT Seller)
I think it is natural for beginning K to just identify beginning sounds. However, in first grade there should be some attention to other sounds within the words. I would suggest conducting more shared writing experiences where they share the pen. You could guide them through stretching out the word with a goal of stretching out the beginning, middle, and ending sounds. You could also have them bring white boards (or plastic plates) :) to the carpet during the model writing. You might also want to do some elkonian box activities during your small group lessons to help them understand the process of hearing all of the sounds within words. There are times when my students become complacent and will not make the effort to look for additional sounds. I am usually very direct in my expectation that they do more. This really depends on the student and the teacher's comfort level with the developmental writing process. P.S. If you need more info. you can email Deedee. She is THE writing EXPERT! :)
