Writer's Workshop is a wonderful way to incorporate all of the ELA standards while introducing your students to the love of writing. This best practice unit was created by two kindergarten teachers with over 20 years of classroom experience. Classroom tested and student approved.

This is the THIRD unit in a series of monthly units that will walk you through the third month of writer's workshop. This unit is about PROCEDURAL (“How-to”) writing.

Included:

Writer's Workshop Framework Guide
Management ideas
Monthly overview
Mentor Text Lists
Detailed daily writer's workshop lessons
Anchor charts
Scoring Rubrics
and additional forms

In addition to addressing various Reading: Foundational Skills, Speaking/Listening, and Language Common Core Standards, the following writing CCSS are addressed:

K.W.5 With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and add details to strengthen writing as needed.
1.W.5 With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed.

K.W.7 . Participate in shared research and writing projects
1.W.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of “how-to” books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).

K.W.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
1.W.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

These lessons will fit perfectly in your kindergarten classroom or for those 1st or 2nd grade students who are new to writer's workshop.

Hi Deanna,
I absolutely love your units. I am into the second term of the school year here in Australia with my little Prep students (Kinder year for you). I am not sure whether to purchase the writing unit one or two. Please can you provide me with some idea?
Kind Regards,
Louise.

If your students are beginning to stretch and write words then I would start with Unit 2 this late in the school year. Thanks so much!

I have purchased this unit and I'm looking forward to using it in my classroom. Our district is following the Lucy Calkins writing for kindergarten which gives general ideas for each writing unit, but not specific mini lessons. So this unit is helpful for mini lessons. One of the units in Lucy Calkins is writing like a scientist, in which children observe, label, and write about objects. I'm wondering if any of the writing units that you have developed would be helpful when teaching that unit?

Hi Deanna,

I was wondering if you would recommend this for a first grade classroom as well, or if it's more slanted towards K. I've been doing writers' workshop in my classroom all year, but our next unit is how-tos so this would be perfect; I just didn't know if it would be appropriate for first grade as well. I teach in an urban, public school so I have students who are on K, 1, and 2 writing levels. And if it is written more for K, could it be easily differentiated up?

Thanks!
Rachel

I purchased your first two writing units and love them! My students writing is amazing. We are finishing up narrative right now. I just noticed that unit 3 is how-to writing. In my district, we go from narrative to persuausive writing. Do you know when you will have your persuasive unit finished???? Thank you for creating such wonderful products and sharing them with others!

Hello again!
Two questions:
-Is each activity only supposed to last 1 day? I know with Calkins, its a process where the student can add on, etc. Not sure if your lessons are expected to be done in 1 day then move on to the next lesson on day 2, and so on...
-Also, what do you suggest for struggling children who do not know many of the letters and barely any sounds. Do they dictate their writing and someone writes it? Im concerned because I have a few strugglers that are not able to produce much work.

HI Maryjo, Generally each mini-lesson is intended to last one day. There are built in days so some lessons can be revisited. However, a student can (and should) be working on a piece over a period of days. You might notice that the lessons are specifically designed so students will see the teacher model the process of returning to a piece of writing over and over.

It is natural to have a few students who do not know sounds or are not ready to write sounds. However, with these units illustrations convey meaning as well. Students should be able to have express themselves visually. With those with little letter knowledge, this is a prefect opportunity to reinforce what they do know. You can ask them to listen for the sounds they know and have them write those sounds down.

I have purchased both Unit 2 and 3 of your writing workshop. I was wondering if you could add that anchor chart reading like a writer to one of your units. I have looked at both the units I purchased but can't seem to find it on there. Thank you so much for all yours and Deedee's hard work. I am enjoying them.

Hi There, Since we didn't use Calkins when we created these units the units don't align with hers. Although since we thought about the stages writers go through the units might compliment each other. Deedee posted the calendar of units on her blog. Here's the link: http://www.mrswillskindergarten.com/2012/08/writers-workshop-updateand-something.html

These are 2 of the standards you listed as being covered but I think they are referring to a "report" not just procedural writing. My county lists these standards in the 2nd quarter so I was hoping to use your unit but we are looking for a writing with an openning, details about the subject, and then a closing sentence.
K.W.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
1.W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
Do you have anything that really addresses these 2 standards?
October 23, 2012 Report inappropriate comment

Deanna Jump  (TpT Seller)
You are correct that they also refer to a report.
We will be doing narrative nonfiction and "all about" reports in units 5 and 6. This will address K.W.2 more directly.
Thanks so much!
