This 2-page, 12-problem worksheet plus answer key gives students practice with writing and evaluating real world algebraic expressions (not the "write an expression for 3 more than twice a number" kind, but real situations). All problems involve decimals. All 4 operations are represented on this worksheet.

Common Core Standards:
6.EE.2 - Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers
6.EE.6 - Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Grades Taught:
Subject Area:

I have 18 years of teaching experience, 4 years in elementary 14 in middle school. After 6 years of teaching Algebra 1 GATE and pre-algebra, I took on a new position as a math intervention specialist helping struggling math students, preparing lessons for teachers, and team-teaching with classroom math teachers. This year, I am also teaching an algebra 1 part 2 class. I truly believe in the necessity of teaching the "why" of mathematics. My favorite moments are the "Oh, now I get it!" ones.
