Here are two activities for students to practice their writing by using sentence variety--especially with compound, complex, and compound/complex sentences. One activity has them write a paragraph using variety and the other has them finding various types of sentences in a short story--the story can be changed to whatever you are currently reading.

For the past 25 years I have taught everything from junior high (7th and 8th grade) English, including gifted ed, to university English and education, to adult education in a vocational rehabilitation center, to high school English, with an emphasis on AP Language and AP Literature.
