Yearbook Page Requirements Checklist for Journalism Students

A valuable tool for any yearbook adviser! This checklist covers everything the student should include for that yearbook page. All sections represented: Sports pages, Events, People ("Mug" pages), Academics, Organizations, Table of Contents, Colophon, Index/Advertising, etc.

You can customize this file with your school name and text sizes/style of fonts.

Makes yearbook production much easier for you and the student/staffer. Also, it's a great tool for grading--if students do not have all the requirements in the handout, points could be deducted.

This IS included in my Journalism Writing & Planning Bundle.

I've been yearbook adviser for 11 years, and I have to confess that I've had a different checklist every year. This is a perfect checklist for all types of spreads. Nice work!

Tracee,

I am teaching middle school yearbook for the first time with 6-8 graders. Do you know of any books, etc., that can possible give me an idea of what I'm doing?

On  June 8, 2012Tracee Orman answered:
Hi Shane. Yearbook is one of those jobs that you don't realize how much work that goes into it until you have to do it. Will yearbook be a class, or is it an extracurricular? I've taught it both ways and loved having it as a class, just to have the work time and hold kids accountable.

We used the Homer Hall textbook for high school, but there is a junior high one. They may be outdated now, but the information was good. Here's a link to the Amazon listings: http://www.amazon.com/Homer-L.-Hall/e/B001JS3XBK/ref=ntt_dp_epwbk_0

One online source I used a lot was the teacher resources page on high school journalism: http://www.hsj.org/Teachers/index.cfm?menu_id=6
They may have a "middle school journalism" page; even if they don't, there are wonderful resources on this one (all free) that you will find helpful.

Will your school be hiring a company to print them professionally? If so, Walsworth (which is who we used) provided us with so many resources (more than enough) & a handbook. You should inquire with the printer/publisher because most of the time those resources are free for advisors.

Good luck, Shane! Let me know if you need anything or have questions. It is a huge job, but very rewarding!
