In this Geography/Social Studies activity, students “win” a free trip to any destination in the world! In order to claim their prize, they must provide a detailed geographical assessment of their dream vacation locale!
Each student chooses a different location around the world and provides a detailed analysis of the location’s climate, landforms, vegetation, and other features and compares them to their own home. When students return from their "trip", they are to bring in their suitcase and provide the class with information about their vacations. Since no two students are allowed to visit the same destination, this ensures that projects and presentations are interesting and fresh. This activity is classroom tested! My students and I had a great time during this unit and they all said that it was lots of fun!

I purchased and downloaded your unit "Zipping Around the World: A Fun Project to Learn about other Countries!" (290086) and am excited to begin the unit in my classroom. I did have a quick question- in the unit your refer to turning everything in in a suitcase. Is this a pattern for a paper suitcase (portfolio style) or a real suticase that you would have the students bring their work back into the classroom in? If a pattern, I'd love to have a copy or picture of it so that I can duplicate it.

Thanks for your question! The "suitcase" is open to student interpretation. Some students used a knapsack decorated with patches from their "travels", others made a suitcase from a cereal or shoe box, while others designed something unique to their destination (e.g. one student repurposed a t-shirt from the actual location into a bag). We left it open to maximize student creativity! Enjoy the activity!
