This is a great activity followed by an essay for students reading the vignettes in Sandra Cisnero's beautiful narrative, The House on Mango Street. This will get students to think about their own heritage and their namesakes. It will get them involved in other cultures as well as their own.

Before becoming a teacher, I was a substitute teacher as I attended my undergraduate studies at the State University of New York at Geneseo. I have been a high school English teacher in New York State for 10 years. My undergraduate work consisted of Secondary Education with Concentration in English and History from SUNY Geneseo. My master's degree concentrated on integrating technology into the curriculum from the University of Phoenix Online. Many of my lessons integrate the use of technology in some way. I have been a teacher author for Teachers Pay Teachers since March of 2007.
