Hi,

I am moving from 5th to 4th grade next year. I am currently using the ELA interactive notebook for 5th grade and was wondering was wondering if the 4th grade is fairly similar or if it is different enough to buy the 4th grade packet.

Hi! Thanks for your question! I created each version based on the specific grade level standards, so there are some 4th grade standards that aren't in 5th, so they aren't in the 5th version. Likewise there are some 5th that aren't in 4th, so you will have extra. You wouldn't be able to use the 5th grade version and cover all the 4th grade standards, but I don't think there would be too many left out. Send me an email at hleblanc@2brainyapples.com :)

I love your American Revolution pack and am wondering if you plan on adding any other historical figures? Maybe a "Part 2"? We are watching the Liberty's Kids series from PBS and would love to have more of the characters/important historical people. I would buy it in a second if you would create it!! :) Thanks!

Thank you so much for asking! I am going to be creating many more packs soon. I am already planning the following packs: human rights leaders, women's history, leaders of the 20th century, inventors, new world explorers, and native americans. I will be adding more than these, these are just the ones currently on my list. However, I am always open to suggestions, so feel free to suggest! :)

I looked at the Heroes of American Revolution packs that you have. Is the only difference between them the Lexile level? Its difficult to compare using the samples. The questions appear to be the same for the 4th and 5th grade packs.

Thank you.

2 Brainy Apples
2 Brainy Apples  (TpT Seller)
The main difference is the Lexile level of the packs. Also, the questions will be slightly different depending on the CCSS for each grade. There is greater difference between the 3rd and 4th grade questions than the 4th and 5th grade questions due to the CCSS for those grade levels. For example, the 4th grade pack will have inference questions, but the 3rd grade pack will not. I tried to make the questions as similar as possible, though, so if someone had different reading levels in their classroom they could use the different packs at the same time with the students. The 5th grade pack is made specifically for 5th grade, the 4th grade pack is specifically made for 4th grade, and the same for the 3rd grade pack. So if you teach 5th grade, you would want to purchase the 5th grade pack. The only reason why you would want to purchase the 4th or 3rd grade pack if you teach 5th grade is if you have students who could not read on grade level, and you needed easier passages.

I am in the process of uploading a bundle of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade packs, and the preview will have all 3 lessons on Abigail Adams so you can compare side by side the differences and similarities. But just to reiterate, the passages in all 3 packs are different in the Lexile level, and the questions could be slightly different depending on the CCSS. Since all 3 grade levels have a main idea and key details standard, those questions will be very similar, if not the same, for all 3 grade levels.

I hope that clarifies a bit. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask! I would advise purchasing the pack made for the grade level you are teaching, unless your students struggle with reading on that level :)

Teaching Metamorphosis
Teaching Metamorphosis  (TpT Seller) re: Interactive Notebook for Close Reads: Beginner's Kit
What is the difference between your beginner's kit and your literature and informational text close reads notebooks?
March 19, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
2 Brainy Apples
2 Brainy Apples  (TpT Seller)
Great question! My Beginner's Kit is more generic than the literature/informational notebooks. The Beginner's Kit isn't tied to a specific grade level. Instead I used the Common Core Anchor Standards which are more broad. I created this notebook for those who weren't quite sure they wanted to use interactive notebooks or who were not familiar with close reads to dip their toes in the water :) The interactive organizers are fairly basic, too. They are just rectangular, square, or circular organizers.

The literature and informational notebooks are created specifically for a grade level, so the 3rd grade notebooks are correlated to 3rd grade's CCSS for either literature or informational texts. They also include detailed, sample lessons using a specific that can be used with each interactive organizer included. The lessons are included to show you how to use the interactive organizer and how you could teach that specific standard. You can then use any book you choose. Then, when needed, I have also included an editable interactive organizer so you can customize it for a specific book. The interactive organizers are also a little more complex because I have used actual clip art instead of just boxes or circles.

If you are trying to decide between the two, it would depend on your comfort level with interactive notebooks and close reads. If you have used interactive notebooks in the past, then I would suggest the literature/informational notebooks. If you have a little experience with close reads, then I would suggest the literature/informational notebooks. If you have not used interactive notebooks at all, nor have you any experience with close reads, the Beginner's Kit may be less overwhelming, unless you are the kind of person who likes to jump in with both feet. Then I would suggest the literature/informational notebooks :)

The literature notebook is tied to the literature strand, and the informational notebook is tied to the informational text strand.

I hope that helped clarify things a bit. If you have any more questions, please ask away! :)

Thanks so much for asking. When you open the file with Adobe, is the full page there or is it cut off some? If it is cut off some or not you are not seeing the full page, you will nee to update to the latest version of Adobe.

If the file looks correct when viewing it in Adobe and it is just printing cut off, my guess would be to check the margins on your printer. This link should help you adjust your printing preferences so that it isn't cut off anymore:

The Revolutionary War is part of the fourth grade curriculum in Tennessee, but you have these listed as fifth grade close reads. Would these reads be too hard for my class? I know I can use them for my top kids, but I'd like to use them with all my reading groups.

Thanks so much for your question! The reading levels of the 5th grade pack range from 870L-1060L, so they are in the 5th grade range of Lexile reading levels. They would probably be too difficult for 4th grade students who are struggling to read on grade level. The sampler pack includes the passage about Abigail Adams. The reading level of this one is 1000L so it is about in the middle of the range I included. You can find the sampler pack at http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Close-Reads-Pack-American-Revolutionary-War-Heroes-5th-Grade-SAMPLER-1151180 to see how that passage might fit your students' reading levels.

I am in the process of creating the 4th grade pack right now. It will probably be a few days before I finish it, though. But it is coming very soon! :)

Hi! I included the question cards so you could use them in whatever way you would like. You can have students clue the cards into their notebooks instead of them writing the question. They are questions that pertain to the specific lesson as well as stems that you can fill in with your own questions that pertain to whatever text you are using. In the full file there is an editable version of the stems so you can type them up. Hope that helps!

In your Common Core Word Problem for March 1st Grade edition on Week 2 Friday I noticed a problem. On the bottom of the page you show clocks. It appears 1 clock is pointed at the 7 and the other two are pointed at the 8. The question is What hour do each of the following show. Is this a typo? Your answer key lists one answer of 7. Should thye show different hours?

2 Brainy Apples  (TpT Seller)
Hi there! I wanted students to recognize that when the hour hand is between two hours, the hour is the previous number (often kiddos seem to think that when the hour is 7 for example, the hour hand has to be directly pointing to the 7, or the hour is whatever number the hour hand is closest to). The hour hands on the 3 clocks are at different positions between the 7 and the 8, so the answer for all three clocks is 7. I hope that made sense :)

I own several copies of your 5th Grade Daily Math Reviews. I have a question on how you have trapezoids classified. According to everything I've read, according to my teammates, and according to my math coach, a trapezoid is "a quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides (the parallel sides are called bases)." That would mean that several of the October answer keys would be incorrect. Has anyone else questioned this?
February 19, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
2 Brainy Apples
2 Brainy Apples  (TpT Seller)
Thanks for your question! There are two definitions of a trapezoid. The exclusive definition states it has only 1 pair of parallel sides. The inclusive definition states it has at least 1 pair. States have to decide which definition they prefer. North Carolina, for example, uses the exclusive definition. This is one of the few areas in math that will differ depending on the state you are in because both are correct, it just depends on how you are expected to teach it per your state, district, or school. Since the expectations in my district is inclusive I have created the answer keys accordingly. However, if you are using the exclusive definition then you will need to tweak the answer key for those questions. I hope that made sense :)

I recently purchased your Common Core Question Stems today and can download the PDF file, but when it prints, I am getting some unknown text characters and not what was downloaded. Please assist!

Thank you!

Hey there! The only thing I can think of is if you aren't using the most up to date Adobe. Here is a link to printing issues that TpT offers. Let me know if you are still having problems, but I would actually contact TpT first since they offer technical support.

Buyer re: Interactive Notebook for Close Reads Bundle: 5th Grade
I recently purchased your Interactive Notebook for Close Reads Bundle. I spent a lot of time trying to decide if your product would fit my needs. After purchasing it, I feel that it does not at all fit my needs, and I know that I will not use it. It is full of basic information and standards (that can be purchased much cheeper) that are creatively made. It is obvious that you put a lot of time and effort into this product. However, I thought that the graphic organizers would be more general to teaching the standards and would then apply to a variety of texts. Since the graphic organizers are specific to the one text you suggest, and since there is not a lot of room for the students to write, I will not be able to use this resource in my classroom. Can you please refund my money before I rate your product?

Hi! I see that you just purchased this resource today. The graphic organizers can be used for any text, not just with the texts I included in the example lessons. I only included specific texts with sample lessons so a buyer could see how to use the graphic organizers with a text. I also included an editable graphic organizer version where applicable so you could go in and change the question, along with providing multiple questions for each standard that could be used. I am sorry, but I can't offer a refund because the product description clearly states how this product can be used, that example lessons are included that are specific to texts, but that the graphic organizers (editable versions that are included) can be used to other texts to practice the skills specific to the standards included. You are more than welcome to contact TpT about issuing a refund.

If you have specific texts in mind that you would like to use the graphic organizers with, please email me at hleblanc@2brainyapples.com and I can show you how to use the graphic organizers with that text.

Hi there! In the preview that I have made available, you can see a pretty good example of this product. Each section has a background info page with question prompts and photos of the completed activity, an example lesson with directions, the interactive organizer for that standard, and an answer key. There aren't any student worksheets in this product. I don't really like to give my students worksheets to fill out. I would rather students use interactive organizers to reflect on the text and answer questions. I hope that helps!

Denise Lilly  (TpT Seller) re: 3rd Grade Common Core Word Problem of the Day- February
I discovered this wonderful resource in December and couldn't wait to buy them to start the new year. After printing out the Jan-Mar packets along with the Jan. and Feb. while sorting them out, I found it difficult to determine which pages belong to which month. It would be a good idea to include a footer with a page number, daily review or word problems, and the month on each page. This would be good for students to reference which page we're on when grading them. Thanks!

Kathy B. re: Free 1st Grade Common Core Daily Math Review Sampler
On the answer sheet-Monday Week 1--1.G.A.1 Could the answer be a rectangle etc... with four equal sides?? Just wondering if not, can you correct this and let me know. Love your work.

Thanks for your question! A rectangle is a quadrilateral with opposite sides the same length, so if a polygon has 4 sides of the same length, it can still be classified as a rectangle, but the more specific name would be a square. With my daily math reviews, I try very hard to make sure that common misconceptions/misteachings are avoided such as teaching that a rectangle is the figure that has 2 sides that are longer than the other 2 sides. In upper grades students have to learn and understand the hierarchy of polygons, especially quadrilaterals, and understand that a parallelogram can have 4 equal sides. If the parallelogram has 4 equal sides, then the most specific name it can be classified as would be a square. It kind of goes along with the saying, "All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares." Just understanding when certain polygons can be classified as another and the most specific name. If you don't feel comfortable introducing this concept to younger students, then you don't have to, but I wanted to make sure I addressed this in my math reviews for the younger grades because I know upper grades teachers are highly appreciative when students come to them having some knowledge of how polygons can be classified and not having to reteach that a square can be classified as a rectangle, etc. I hope all that made sense! :)

I love your Interactive Notebooks. As a reading teacher for grades K-5, I would like to do Interactive Notebooks with Each grade level . I see 10 students at each grade level three times per week. Should I purchase one packet for each grade level or could I combine them?

Hi there! The difference between the grade levels is the targeted skills of the interactive organizers. For example, 4th grade includes inferencing where 2nd grade does not. The interactive organizers are made so that you can use them with any text, so you could use the organizers in the 4th grade packet with a text on a 2nd grade level. But, again, if you are looking for specific skills, you would need to purchase the grade level in which that skill falls per Common Core. I included a table of contents on the description of each informational and literature notebook so you can see which skills are included in which notebook. I know how challenging (and expensive) it can be to teach students in difference grade levels as I was an instructional coach and Title 1/EIP for a few years, so send me an email at hleblanc@2brainyapples.com and we can work something out ;)

Hi there! Thank you so much for your purchase. I included answer key pages in the preview and as a thumbnail that show the red font on the answer key. At this time I am unable to do custom orders on my products. You can print the pages off in a gray-scale, though, and the red font will be close to the same shade as black. I hope your students enjoy this product!

I haven't had anyone else say they couldn't access the file….have you tried using a different computer? Once this happened on another product and the lady restarted her computer and it downloaded just fine. Could you try that to see if it resolves the issue or try downloading on another computer? If it still doesn't work, let me know.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 13 years of educational experience. I have taught grades K-5 either as a homeroom teacher, Title I/EIP teacher, Extended Day teacher, and instructional coach. I also privately tutor students.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I love creating tasks that are standards-based and cross-curricular, but also fun and engaging for my students. Tying each task with a real world scenario ensures students see a relevance for the activity, and they feel a connection to how it can apply to their life. Making sure each task is accessible by all students is also very important. That is why I design tasks that are differentiated so every child in the classroom is successful and pushed to his/her fullest potential whether it is done through remediation or enrichment. Teaching students to become real-world problem solvers and applying skills and knowledge to a new situation can be a daunting task. Let me bring my passion, knowledge, and expertise into your classroom! Performance tasks are essential in my classroom. I have seen the most unwilling student complete a task with a smile and remark later about how much fun it was! My students always get excited when they are given a new task because they never know what role they will take on next. Integrating multiple subject areas in a task show students how our world is intertwined with content areas, and it helps them see why what they learn in school really is important. Sure it is difficult for students to complete these tasks at first. Chances are they haven't been required to think in that way, but after modeling, showing exemplars, and having them work collaboratively with others, they soon learn how to become independent real-world problem solvers. I am always amazed at the solutions my students come up with and the projects they create. When you give them the freedom to exercise their creativity in a risk-free environment, the results are beyond expectations!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have been selected as a "Who's Who Among America's Teachers".

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I want my students to see the importance in being lifelong learners, so what better way to show them than by example. I have received advanced degrees in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment as well as Teacher Leadership. I also have my Gifted Endorsement, On-Line Teaching Endorsement, and certification for Administrative Leadership. I am state certified in Georgia to teach grades P-5 and middle grades ELA and science.
