Do you have an answer key for the Archetypes worksheet in your Grendel unit plan?
September 2, 2011 Report inappropriate comment
Adam Erickson
Adam Erickson  (TpT Seller)
Sure:

Grendel= everyman, youth valiantly struggling with human condition, only to find the payoff is merely death.

Dragon=crusty, cynical mentor (also, tempter to evil).

Shaper= Homer-like, blind bard.

Beowulf= mythologically powerful, invincible hero.

Unferth= flawed hero, fodder for the likes of Beowulf. Also, however, Unferth works as a foil for Grendel, in that they are both genuinely interested in finding meaning in their existence.

Wealtheow= unflinchingly loyal, single dimensional, beautiful spouse.

Ork= foolishly naïve religious fanatic.

Hrothulf= foolish and incompetent heir to power.

Red Horse= agitator, foil to power's intellectual system, pseudo Marxist.

Any many others. The point is not to get the answers exactly as I have written them here, but to get students to see that characters in literature tend to fall into recognizable patterns. This is why, while Harry Potter is fun, it is not original. Harry is just like Luke and Frodo. Dumbledore is just like Obe-Wan and Gandolf, etc...

To deliver direct instruction, as part of a class, sure.

You cannot, however, resell my materials as lesson plans for others to use.

To clarify, if you are the administrator of a company, hiring multiple teachers, each teacher must buy these materials. If you are a single teacher, delivering the instruction yourself, you can definitely use these materials.

Hi,
I am going to be teaching a elective during which students compare and contrast classic verses modern interpretations of literature through films. I am looking for some lessons/powerpoints/handouts teaching different ways to write compare/contrast essays. Would you be able to bundle together something like that for me?

Hi Adam,
Thanks for your response!
I am teaching english from 6-11. It will be my first time teaching any english above 6th grade. So I am looking for as much help as I can get. I am unfamiliar with mla and what/how to teach it. I teach in a private school and our english curr. is older and and does not include current updates in writing a research paper which I know my kids will need for college. I would be thankful for anything you might suggest. I will purchase some of your plans you might suggest. Also, do u know of any curriculum or book(s) that actually instruct the 7-12 student on writing a research paper from beginning to end (that is relevant and up to date)? Maybe my students and I can learn together. Thank you in advance for your suggestions and help.
My email is:

My classroom website is linked to this URL: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/
It offers pretty good MLA material.

As far as purchasing a good instructional book goes, I recommend "Write for College," published by Great Source. They also publish "Writer's Inc." Both of these texts will serve you well, in all areas of English instruction, for years; and both have good MLA Research paper sections, including sample research papers.

If you're starting out at the high school level, you should buy one or both of these texts today.

Hope that helps.

I only ask that you don't alter it and then sell it here as a competing product.

What copyright terms do you offer? I anticipate creating derivative works. For instance, rewording and restructuring your presentations. For instance, I have a philosophical stance unit and want to incorporate your "Gauging Philosophical Stances" into my unit for classroom study, but possibly offering the unit for sale later.

Yes, absolutely. Last year when this site opened up, I had a hard drive full of lesson plans. I have always liked to write my own. I often shared them with teachers at my school and with student teachers working in my classes, but all those lessons probably represent about 400 hours of off-the-clock writing and I was sort of looking for a way to get them out there.

So, this is great. I’ve sold about six hundred dollars worth of plans. It did, however, take a couple of days to upload all my lessons, but I’d say it was definitely worth it. The membership paid for itself in about two weeks, if that’s your question.

The way this message is routed through teacherspayteachers, I have no way of knowing which book you're referring to.

But I will chance a guess that you refer to The Things They Carried.

I've taught this book for about four years. It's a great book and is always a student favorite. Interestingly, at the start of the war in Iraq, many students (who where then mostly in favor of the war--or at least not really opposed to it) felt that O'Brien was a bit too introspective and generally came across as wimpy.

Now that Iraq has gone south and everyone at least knows someone who knows someone serving in Iraq, students are a lot more tolerant of the heavy introspection.

As far as my approaches go, what you see in the unit is pretty much what I do. This book, however, more than most, makes for good in-class discussion, as even the most reticent readers usually do the reading each night.

I actually read the title chapter as part of a creative writing workshop I took in my MA program.

Enjoy.

I'm curious how many years you've taught this book? It's one of my all time favorites, and obviously (unfotunately) still timely. Haven't taught it yet.
Have considered using just the title chapter for a creative writing project--so I'm interested to see your approaches.

When I receive questions through TPT, the product you're looking at is not listed, so I can't see which book you're referring to.

I will guess you are asking about either The Things They Carried, or The Joy Luck Club, since they both have title chapters.

In both cases I taught them for about 4 years. My current district's board has not accepted The Things They Carried, and we don't cover The Joy Luck Club in AP Language and composition, which I now teach.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching high school English in northern California for fourteen years an hold both a BA and an MA in English. I have taught every level of high school English: A.P. Language and Composition, ESL/ELD, Resource English, freshman through senior English. I have also been an English department chair, have been designated a "Distinguished Teacher" by various administrations, and have been voted "Most Inspirational Teacher" and "Best Personality" by various student bodies.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am a strong believer in the writing process. I believe that what we go through while writing makes us not only better writers, but makes us better thinkers--more empathetic, more logical, and more successful. I have had great success teaching writing to students across the academic spectrum, from resource classes to AP Language and Composition. I also believe in direct instruction, with humor. I believe students can "scent out" busy work quickly, so that the teacher must be able to justify every assignment they ask the student to complete. The assignments I post here will all directly approach a different element of writing or English language usage. All lessons are tested and have proved valuable and interesting to students.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have been an English department chair, have been designated a "Distinguished Teacher" by various administrations, and have been voted "Most Inspirational Teacher" and "Best Personality" by various student bodies.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

B.A. - English, University of California. Santa Barbara. 1994. M.A. English, California State University, Hayward. 2003. Single Subject Teaching Credential (C.L.A.D.) - English, C.S.U. Hayward, 1999.
