Jennifer Herndon re: 3rd Grade Common Core Opinion Writing
Does this lesson contain anything about teaching topic sentences?

Hello Jenhern,

Yes, the lesson does explain topic sentences. In the teacher instructions, it reads, "This is when I explain to my class that a topic sentence is the main idea the writer is trying to tell the reader. It explains the writer’s topic. There is more information on the topic sentence on the Student Guidelines Page (page 6)," . Later, in the student instructions, I review what the topic sentence is by saying, *The topic sentence is very important because it is the main idea of your letter and your reason for writing it. This is where you explain your topic and your opinion about this topic."
I also give an example of a topic sentence in the student sample.

I hope this information helps! :)

Hi Adrienne,

I just purchased 6th grade common core: opinion writing. I have tried to open it on several computers and I have had no luck.

I just was given the responsibility to teach 5th grade writing according to the new CCGPS. Anything you sell that could help me...since I have not taught writing before...would be so helpful.

Hi There!

I have one 5th grade Common Core assignment on here- it's an opinion writing piece. My reading log also has a lot of story elements that correspond to the Common Core standards. You should focus on inferential learning for sure, and teaching your students how to cite from the text properly. What grade did you used to teach?

I'm hoping to make a similar assignment for summary soon (that looks a bit like my opinion writing piece)! So keep checking back.

Thanks! Good luck this year. :)

I saw your store on the home page of Teachers Pay Teachers; so, I thought I would look at your freebie. I left you a rating. Well done! Since your store is still small, here are a few suggestions that might help you to better market your products.

Add some clipart to add color or just color. For some reason buyers like color on the original even though they may copy your product in black and white. Also, create a cover page for each of your products which can then be used as an attractive thumbnail to entice buyers. (Yes, even for tests. I learned that the hard way.) You might also add a second page which is a directions or suggestions page for the teacher. (How do use the test - pre/post or both? Etc.) List several ways you use this product in your classroom. Never assume that a buyer knows how, why, or when to use your product.

Use the footer to put the copyright symbol, your name and date of creation on EVERY page. Items, especially free ones, have been "stolen" from TPT and posted on other sites to be sold. You have to protect all of your creations. Here is what I put at the bottom of my tests:

The original purchaser of this document is granted permission to copy for teaching purposes only. If you are NOT the original purchaser, please download the item from my store before making any copies. Redistributing, selling, or posting this item or any part thereof on the Internet are strictly prohibited without first gaining permission from the author. Violations are subject to the penalties of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Please contact me at (e-mail addresss) if you wish to be granted special permission.

You may edit this test however you would like, but I would appreciate it if you
left the copyright information on each page. Thank you.
Also number your pages. Finally, unless you want your products revised (I do for my tests) save everything in a PDF format as it is harder to change.

I’d love to have your input on any one of my freebies listed below. I teach math but I like to see what others think as well.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught 6th grade for 8 years at both the middle school and elementary school setting. I am GATE-certified and enjoy incorporating choice into my lessons. I work with 1st and 4th graders as well during the summers. I love working with children and learn from them every day!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I love creative assignments and choice. I try to utilize multiple intelligences learning styles whenever possible! I love to let my students read from the carpet (even in sixth grade) or sit on their desks to change up their perspective. I love using the Socratic Method with my students.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I was awarded a provost scholarship during my undergraduate degree and offered a fantastic fellowship for my graduate education program!

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have my undergraduate degree from NYU, where I studied creative writing. I've taught gifted middle school students and mainstreamed elementary school students for the past 8 years. Prior to teaching sixth grade, I was a reading specialist who worked with high-school immigrants who read at the kindergarten level.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I love reading, creative writing, working out, swimming in the ocean, and being around positive people!
