This is my eighth year of teaching, and I currently teach 7th grade humanities in Washington state. Curriculum design is one of my favorite parts of the job. Six years ago I redesigned our seventh grade humanities curriculum to change it from a chronological approach to a thematic approach, and I've been obsessively refining it ever since. I also started teaching some online high school courses last year, which has been a great experience for me!
Pedagogically speaking, I think I mix the innovative with the traditional. I use many creative ideas and approaches, but I also see the value in the occasional worksheet, or in having students memorize countries and capitals. As far as classroom management, well, I've heard kids say that I'm strict and mean, and I've heard kids say that I'm the nicest teacher ever, so I don't know what to tell you!
One of my favorite parts of teaching is looking over my group of kids and seeing them completely engaged in their work. Not because they want an 'A,' not because they'll get in trouble if they don't work, but because they're truly interested in what they're doing.
