Buyer re: Building a First Grade Word Wall
Love love love this! Everything I've been looking for in a word wall. Quick question, could you possibly make an editable version or would you be willing to make some tweaks to the headers? If the letters had the lines for handwriting they could replace my alphabet and I've also been looking for ones that contain 2 pictures for the letters with 2 sounds (vowels as well as c,g,x). Also different colors for the vowel letters would be good... thanks!

Andrea Knight  (TpT Seller)
I'm so glad you like this item overall. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll have time to make these changes. To my recollection, I thought the vowels had a red border around them and the consonants had a blue border around them. I did this so it would be consistent with my magnet letters from Lakeshore Learning. As far as the images go, I'm limited by the clipart I had available at the time I created the materials for my classroom and those pictures were the ones included in the alphabet set. I hope you're able to find a way to use the headers.

Have a wonderful summer!

Hi Noelia,

For "Day 4," any book with more than one character will work. I like the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems because there are only a few characters to choose from and each is very different.

For "Day 5," any book with a common kid-theme would help them make a connection. There are many great choices, but I like Kevin Henkes' books because they're about common topics kids "get," like jealousy, bullying, overcoming fears, etc.

Hope this helps,
Andrea :)

Hi Susan,

The size of the word cards is 190, but I have to use a slightly smaller size to fit children's names on the cards. (Typically, I type the longest student name first so I know how little the font has to be. Then, I match the other students' names to that size.) The font on the cards is "Century Gothic."

This sounds like a great idea but I'm wondering how you get them started? How do you introduce the data folders? Are your students using them completely independently or when they are meeting with you? I guess I'm just trying to figure out how they would use these on their own if they don't know if they're correct or not. I'm hoping you can offer some insight because I really like the idea of the students doing it on their own and would purchase. I just want to get a better idea of how it works in your classroom. Thanks!!!

June 20, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Andrea Knight
Andrea Knight  (TpT Seller)
Hi Jen,

I always begin by talking about goal-setting and we usually start off with a whole-class goal as an example... something like reading stamina, graphed in minutes. We talk about how we (1) set a reasonable goal, (2) keep track of how we're doing along the way, and (3) celebrate achieving the goal and possibly setting a new goal. Connecting goal-setting to something relevant from the students' lives is helpful, too. Many of my first graders have recently learned how to swim and/or ride their bikes, so I compare goal-setting and data collection to those experiences... how they might have a goal just to make it to the end of the street and how they work on just going a few feet more with each try until they make it. This way, they won't see it as just "something they do at school." After they're comfortable with what goal-setting and data collection mean, you can introduce an individual graph of your choice. This can be done whole-group or during small-group instruction, whatever works better for your schedule and your children's needs. Little by little, you can continue to add more graphs as needed. Be careful not to overwhelm them (or yourself) with the task. You may even find that some children have a few more graphs than others, depending on your RTI needs and how much you think each individual child can maintain. Hope this helps. :)

The resource is a set of 8 posters of characters used for writing, they included;

Andrea Knight  (TpT Seller)
Hi Cathy,

I don't have a sheet of instructions, but it's very easy to use. I just advance the slides and the children say the word they see. Since they are sight words, my goal is for the children to know these words automatically on sight. At first, I advance the slides at a slower pace so the children are successful, but gradually (over days), I increase the speed. They love trying to keep up. The reason they stay engaged is because they're waiting for the "fun words" (like snap, clap, stomp) to come up on the slides. When they see one of these words, they do what it says. When the slide says "Bump!" the children bump up out of their seats and then sit back down. I hope this explanation helps. :)

I purchased the Primary Classroom Labels from you and love them! I teach Dual Language (Spanish/English) and was wondering if you had a Word copy that you would allow me to edit the text and add the Spanish version. I would love to do it and send it back to you for you to use/sell as well. kbustos@d41.org Thanks!

Kristyn... I'm sorry. There are two reasons I can't send it in editable form. Per clipart copyright agreements, I can't send an unsecured file because the clipart can be lifted and used. Also, I have a MacBook so the document was created in "Pages," an Apple program. I don't have Word. I wish I could help because it's a wonderful idea. Maybe you could print the Spanish words on labels and add them to the front of each card. :)

Do you sell the toys that teach separately? I would like those but don't need the entire resource.

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for your comment. :) I'm sorry I don't have any for 2nd grade at this time, though. There might be another seller on TPT who offers plans for your grade level. Have a great week!

Do you have set #2?

Set #2 includes sorting sums (addition) and set #3 focuses on sorting differences (subtraction). Both are located in the store. :)

Thanks,
Andrea

Hi Andrea,

I purchased your library labels last year and absolutely love them. I was wondering if you might be able to add some additional labels for the following: Bad Kitty, and My Weirder School Series. Thank you!

Hi Meredith,

At this time, I'm not able to make additional labels, but I included a blank one in the set of materials. You could "cut and paste" or glue your favorite image directly onto the blank template so all your tags are the same size.

Thank you,
Andrea Knight :)

Andrea, I LOVED this book, but wanted to ask you if there's a way to make it where it can fold like a book :) I usually run these front and back, but I couldn't figure out how to do it with the order of the pages. Thanks for your help :)

Hi Faith,

I didn't make it that way... sorry. (Probably because spatial awareness is not a gift of mine.) My volunteer just cuts the copies in half and staples them together.

Thanks,
Andrea

Thanks for your reply. I would love to translate them but I would have to cut the translation and paste it onto the poster. I wonder if you can send me the file in a non-pdf format and I translate them for my use and then send you back the translation for you to sell. It would be easier for me than cutting and pasting. I bought them and can cut and paste translations on top but it wouldn't look as nice as you made them. Let me know. Thanks!

Hi Emily,

Per clipart copyright agreements, I'm not able to send you the document in an unsecured format. I appreciate your willingness to translate them, but most artists' "Terms of Use" prohibit this type of sharing due to infringement policies.

Thank you,
Andrea

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 17 years of teaching experience with primary children. Most of those years have been with children in 1st and 2nd grades, as well as intensive reading remediation with K-3 students. I am currently serving as a literacy coach in a PreK-5 elementary school.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe children learn best in classrooms that are highly engaging and cooperative in design, with a focus on multisensory instruction. A balanced literacy program and integrated studies are important to me so children experience a connectedness throughout their day and across the year.
