Hi Angie, On Friday I purchased K, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 of your class signs. I am trying to print the goals, but the first grade set will not allow me to print. It is saying it has a password security, that does not allow printing and the print button does not show up when I open the document. I did not have any trouble printing from the other 5 sets. Do you have any suggestions? I purchased them all at the same time, and tried to download them all on the same day from the same computer.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I just checked and found that I forgot to remove password protection for printing. I'll upload the version that can be printed right away! Or, e-mail me via the contact form at www.mathpaths.com and I'll give you the password and send you a free product of your choice as a reward for letting me know. Angie

I have been using your free ccss math goals leaflet for grade 3, absolutely love this. Our district would like to use the 1, 2, 3, and 4 levels of proficiency, with the 1 meaning, "I can't do this." the 2 meaning, "I can do this with help." the 3 meaning, "I can do this by myself." and the 4 meaning, "I can do this and explain this." I only use the leaflet in my classroom and tell others it's copyrighted so they have to get it for themselves. Is the 1,2,3, and 4 levels and descriptors also copyrighted and if so, who would I contact for permission to use them for our district?
March 3, 2014 Report inappropriate comment

Angie Seltzer  (TpT Seller)
Thanks for asking about copyright! Some people are not as conscientious. It is my understanding that the exact wording of the whole set of descriptors could be considered copyrighted, but not the idea. So, it's fine for you to use essentially the same 4-point scale but with minor variations. Your wording in your question says "I can't do this" instead of "I don't get it," and "I can do this by myself" instead of "I can do this on my own." This is sufficiently different to avoid copyright issues. You are welcome to tell others in your district about these free leaflets and/or e-mail the link to the free files at TpT. Also, you may be interested in the FREE Multi-Match Games Guide with several related free card sets, plus lots and lots of sets for $1 or less. I'm currently working on games for "Same Area, Different Perimeter" and "Same Perimeter, Different Area." Thanks again for respecting copyright! :)

Thanks so much for suggesting the Excel goal spreadsheets to your principal! I have had several requests for CCSS reading products, but I really don't have enough experience to create concise yet comprehensive goals for reading. I live and breathe mathematics! :-) However, if your curriculum committee agrees on a set of reading goals, I can put them into a spreadsheet format similar to the one for math. Just write to me using the contact form on my mathpaths website. Have a good weekend! --Angie

Hello! We LOVE your free "I Can" leaflets and Common Core poster for math. It is truly perfect for my school's needs and the changes we are making with our curriculum. We would LOVE to have the same thing for the reading standards. I see that you are a math specialist, but if you ever put these together for reading please let me know. I am trying to set up something similar, but it is very time consuming.. I thought I'd check in to see if you have had other requests for this - there isn't anything else out there. Thanks!!

Hi MrsFrizzles,
Thanks so much for your positive remarks about my free math goal leaflets. Other teachers have indeed asked me to create a similar product for reading/language. However, although the list looks simple, it required a great deal of effort and cross-checking among grade levels. And, because of my experience with writing and editing of math textbooks, I knew what wording would be familiar to teachers. However, my familiarity with current reading curriculum is very limited; things have changed a lot since I got my elementary teaching degree in 1977!

How many teachers would be using reading checklists in your district? Perhaps I can do the layout if you and/or other teachers prepare the manuscript. As payment, perhaps the district can purchase more of the posters, Math Goal Signs, Goal Trackers, or my other products. Think about this and let me know.

Have a great afternoon!

#3 = "Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s"

This part of the standard seems to mean that children should be able to tell if any two single digit numbers put together would make the sum odd or even...just as in your example of 5 + 7 = 12. What do you think? Thanks!

My interpretation of 2.OA.3 is a little different. The cluster is described as "Work with equal groups to gain foundations for multiplication." So, I don't think students are required by the standards to know that E + E = E or E + O = O. But it's a good generalization for students to discuss when learning addition facts in 2.OA.2. You may want to take a look at my website, www.mathpaths.com to see notes about certain standards. Don't work too hard on Labor Day! :)

Angie Seltzer  (TpT Seller)
Hi Lupe,
My checklists are lists of goals/objectives to help students meet the Common Core standards as released by the National Governors Association and available from CoreStandards.org. I just downloaded a California standards file from the CDE website and made a quick comparison. For Grade 2, the California document has the same clusters as the version from CoreStandards.org. States who adopt Common Core are required to use ALL of the standards, but may add up to 10% extra of state specific standards. I didn't see any extra in the Grade 2 clusters, but I didn't read every word. If you know of a list of additions for California, I'll be glad to make a California version. Good luck with the transition! I think the new standards for primary are a big improvement because of the increase in emphasis on place value and modeling, and fewer topics per grade. Have a great school year!

Angie,
I am the Facilitating Teacher of the Maury County Teacher Center in Columbia, TN. Our math teachers would like to purchase your CCSS checklist charts for their rooms. We have a large format printer here at the center which I can use to enlarge those to poster size which seems to be acceptable to you from the information you give on your materials. Would we just need to pay the $2.49 per grade level for the first teacher and then $1.99 per teacher for each additional license in that grade level? This is for a middle school, grades 5-8. I wanted to clarify before we made the purchase. If the teachers like these, I will most likely have many more orders for you since we are going to CCSS in our district during this school year.
Thank you,

Also, did you see the new Class Goal Signs? That product has each goal on a single page, shown with the icon for the domain. The goals are exactly the same as the ones on the checklists.

I am working on an update to the posters, with some tweaks to the design. The layout now shows icons for the domains to make them easier to find at a glance. I have a few more days of work to finish all of the levels K-8. I plan to post them all to TpT on the same day. However, if you send me your e-mail address, I'll be happy to send a preview of the updated version.

Did you see the FREE leaflet versions of the goals, written in "I can" format? Those were just posted about a month ago.

Hi Sabre,
Because you are teaching Special Ed, I suggest that you buy the K-5 bundle and the Excel version that is K-8. With the Excel document, you'll be able to create lists of objectives for individual students across strands or grades.

I think your items are the best common core material out there. I am wondering if you plan self assessment packets for grades 4-8 like the one you have posted for grade 3?
If so, I want to buy them!

Also, is there any way for you to take your grade specific checklists and modify them so that each standard has it's own page and it includes a detailed 4-8 checklist of that standard? For example one page for The Number System, but that page having all grades 4-8 detailed (as you do on the grade specific page) checklists. I am teaching a remedial class in the fall and want the kids to be able to track their "catch up" progress by standard and I want to use your material. I could jing it from what I have of yours but would rather buy it from you, as I really like your design style.

Again, I love love love what you are doing! Thank you so very much.

At our school the K teacher and grade 1 teacher co-teach math, the grade 2 teacher has her own math class, and the grade 3 and grade 4/5 teacher co-teach math. Should we order three licenses for our 3 math classes, or should we order 1 license per homeroom which would be 5 licenses? Your description indicated one teacher and their students. We teach at a small school, so we're organized differently than a large school. We're all very excited about getting such a quality product, read the ratings and comments. Please let me know how you want us order this product.

Hi laroyel, Thanks so much for asking about licensing. I'm glad that you want to be fair. If two teachers are co-teaching, it is fine to let them share a license. Make sure to look at the different bundles that I offer. The CCSS products that are marked as for one grade level for $2.49 actually include four posters: an overview plus checklists for the previous, current, and next grade levels. For the teachers that co-teach Grades 3-5, you may want to get the K-5 bundle so the Grade 3 teacher can see Grade 2 objectives. I hope that this is clear.

I am confused b/c I see you have a couple of Common Core packets. I teach math special ed grades 5 through 8. Your items seen like they would be helpful. I like the color coding. Do I purchase for each individual grades? Do you have a bundle? I do not want to purchase duplicates.
Thank you. alice silveiraa@easthampton.k12.ma.us

Thanks for asking. I have a packet for Grades 4-8 that includes each of those grade levels as a PDF poster plus an overview poster. These posters can also be printed on letter-size paper. If you want the editable version, I just offer the K-8 file. Other teachers have told me that this file can save them a lot of time! Good luck with your transition to Common Core.

Yes, but I recently updated all of the files and for some reason the files for grades 1, 4, and 8 did not upload properly. I temporarily turned off those grades. But my computer is in the shop and I will relist the files next week. Sorry for the problem.

When you print the PDF file, change the scale to 64% or choose "scale to fit paper" or similar box. By the way, I will be posting a revision soon that gives the heading as Grade 1 instead of Level A and includes numbers of the specific CCS standards for each highlighted statement. You will get a link to download the revision for free. There are no changes to the checklist items. Have a great week! Angie

Hi Angie,

Can you help me to understand how the common core math is laid out? For instance, do you think it is an incremental process. C.A2 leads up to D.A2 which leads up to E. A2. I teach Special education and I am writing goals for my students. This is perplexing me. :) --Desiree'

Hi Desiree,
The skills build from year-to-year but you will need to look at all of the checklist items in a strand. C is Grade 3, D is Grade 4, E is Grade 5. The "A" strand is Operations and Algebraic Thinking, so look at the items for each grade in that strand. I hope that this information helps!

Hi Mary,
Editable versions are available for either Microsoft Word or Excel. In my store, choose the category for Grade-Cluster Posters/Checklists. Here are the file titles.

K-8 Math Checklists (Editable .DOC FIle) of Problem Types for CCSS
K-8 Math Checklists (Editable .XLS FIle) of Problem Types for CCSS

These files include all 9 grade levels. Thanks for asking!

Thanks for checking! Yes, there are problem types for each of the content standards. The correlation is shown in the Excel version of the K-8 checklist.
The Standards for Mathematical Practice are not addressed. However, I plan to create some posters and sample questions for Mathematical Practice Standards this fall.

Thanks for your question. You will notice that the title says "Cluster Overviews for K-8, K-5, and 4-8." Those overview pages are not watermarked (stamped). The description states that you will receive previews of the grade level charts which relate closely to the overviews. The previews are "for review only" so that you can completely evaluate those pages before you make a purchase, only $2.99 for a single grade level. I hope your summer is going well and that you will have a great school year!

I'm considering purchasing the K-5 common core math checklist posters. How come you didn't include 6th? Why do you break them down into levels/letters instead of grades?

Angie Seltzer  (TpT Seller)
Thanks for asking. You can get Grade 6 in the 4-8 bundle or the K-8 bundle. Originally I just offered K-8, but then decided to offer K-5 and 4-8 because a teacher should refer to the grade level above and below but may not need all 9 grades. The grade is marked in small print in the gray area at upper left. The reason the grades are marked as levels is that, during transition to CCSS, students may be assigned topics from a lower grade. Using letters helps avoid stigmatizing students who need to work on lower-grade topics.

Thanks for asking. I just looked up your standards and see that there are literally only a few extra standards (not counting PreK). I will try to find time to create a Massachusetts version of the one-page posters. I also offer two editable versions for Math K-8 listed in my store. One is a Word document and the other is in Excel. The Excel document has a column with exact numbering of the related Common Core standard. I am also willing to create custom layouts but please contact me through my website, www.mathpaths.com. I hope you are enjoying the summer! Angie

The color-coded layouts were created with Adobe InDesign and I prefer not to release those files. And, I'm not sure if a checklist related to the ELA standards would fit on a page. If you have manuscript for the ELA checklist, I am willing to consider doing the layout for you. Please contact me through my website, www.mathpaths.com.

The ".doc" version has the cluster statements underlined in color to match the large overview poster that I offer for free. I'm not sure how you plan to edit the documents, but all of the content on the overview poster is directly from CCSS at www.corestandards.org. What each poster provides is the convenient layout, which cannot be done effectively in Word. I hope this information is helpful.
