Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)
Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.
I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.
Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

Anna, I bought and downloaded the file and most of the numbers and words are not printing. The word sort was ok and part of the time match was ok. The digital times, number riddles, abc order, making words, and measuring was either blank or had black marks on them. Let me know what I should do to remedy this problem. Hey there! Thanks you for your purchase! So sorry you are having problems opening the file. Try these troubleshooting tips and let me know if you still can't open the file.
1. Make sure you are using an up to date version of Acrobat Reader.
You can check the version by clicking Help then About from within
reader. If you have a version earlier than 5.0 or 6.0, you should
update your reader.
2. If you have a Mac, you may be opening it with a Mac program
called "Preview" and not even know it. Preview has documented problems
opening modern Adobe files. If you have a Mac, try opening Adobe
Reader first (rather than just clicking on the file), then open the
file within Adobe Reader. You may also choose to set the default
reader to Adobe Reader by following the instructions here.
To change the default reader on a Mac to Adobe:

Hi, Anna! I teach for a Virtual Academy. We are currently working on transitioning to using the Common Core Standards and looking for ways to incorporate Math Journaling into our classrooms. Doing this would mean that I would need to use your prompts in an electronic form. Is this a possibility, if, of course, credit was given to their creator? Our classes are hosted in Blackboard and only open to users that are enrolled in our classes. Thanks! :)

I love how these really make students THINK! They are fabulous! I just love ALL of your stuff. You are amazing!! Now ... here's my question ... I don't like having my first graders (at least most of them) write in notebooks because I still like having them write on paper with dotted lines in the middle. Is there ANY CHANCE you would be willing to put these prompts onto separate pages with lined paper on them??

Hi! I was wondering if your writing math prompts match the first grade CCSS? You have both 1st and 2nd grade identified as the instructional level, but I can't read the examples you've thumb-nailed to see closely enough as to what level/age these best fit. I am such a dork. Today I bought this writing pack AND I also happened to purchase the informational and opinion packs separately. I thought this was only the narrative pack... I didn't realize there was even a pack with all three styles! So... would it be possible for me to get a reimbursement or can I spend the $13 on something else from your store? It was an honest mistake to purchase duplicates of your writing packs.
