Annie,
Love your little owl- what program did you create him in? I need to start learning some computer programs to jazz up my lesson plans that I use in the classroom. At 59 years of age I haven't really gotten into computers, but I need to change that. Any suggestions you can give me would be wonderful. I teach K-1, so I am looking to make cute clip-art to jazz up lesson sheets.

Thanks so much!

Hi Donna -- I think you will love my resource -- mycutegraphics. com. The artist is so gracious to let teachers have this resource at no cost -- to use even on items we create for sale. I thank her (in my mind -- or now and then with a note) every time I'm working on a project and can use her cute clip art. She has CUTE stuff in so many categories.
I've dabbled in creating a few clip art pictures of my own, but it's so time consuming. I can't do both -- unless I can't find what I need. (example: My groundhog emergent readers/non fiction reader ---I used her groundhog, but then drew all the added details.) I use Adobe Illustrator. It's my favorite, but I've used it for years -- still learning new things about it!
Visit her site...Let me know what you think. I think you'll be delighted with the find!! I hope this has been helpful Enjoy your day....Annie from Arizona

Do you have a guided reading level for these books? I teach kindergarten.

Hi Candace, I am not sure what you mean? Like a Lexile score? I don't have anything like that. My first grade team used the non-fiction book with our classes, and the emergent reader as well, with our lower level readers. I also shared the emergent reader with our Kindergarten team, and they said it worked well for their students. Let me know if there is something more I can do for you.

Hi Annie,

I'm a new second grade teacher and have to progress monitor using DIBELS. I love the nonsense word for real sets. Do you have a bundled set for purchase? How do you utilize them best?

Hi Chrissy,
Thanks for your question. Yes, I progress monitor, too, but wanted to make those times more valuable --hence the reason NW for Real came about.
I had considered bundling once I got all sets dones (took a few months!) , but haven't explored how to put more than one PDF file in a bundle. Do you know how to do that? Your question has motivated me to get the answer, so I will seek it out.
Here is my blog link about Nonsense Words: http://firstgradewithanniebrown.blogspot.com/p/nonsense-words-for-real-has-been.html
Since I wrote that I've added a couple other things. (After I've shown them the concept of NW to Real, and we've practiced as a group ) I have my students work at their table teams with a stack of word cards as a 3-5 warm up before we start our focus lesson. They can help each other, and work to get through as many as they can. I walk around an listen, then I ask them to pick one word to read to me (They usually want to read more than one!). Then we put them away until next time.
Every few times, we'll gather as a group and read them together (not all, but a stack). I tell them we'll retire the ones they are really strong in reading. They get excited about that -- as they have mastered some big words!
I hope that helps. :-)

I've also had them work in partners.
My struggling readers can work on the 2 syllable, more easily decoded words , i.e. fuzzy, bottle .

It looks like you are in Phx...I'm in Mesa.

Hi, They should be in my store. My first set is free, then I have 5 other sets. Here's the link to the first set.

That should also take you to my store where the other sets are. Let me know if this worked for you. Happy to help, and hope your son is successful. Thanks !

Hi Annie, I wanted to send this more privately, but can't seem to find an email address for you. I was wondering if I might make a few suggestions. I really like your Veterans Day Survey and Graph, but wanted to share a website that explains why the spelling is Veterans (http://www1.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetday_faq.asp). Then, I wondered if you meant to spell "DAy" that way or if it should be "Day". And finally, I've been looking for a meaningful way for students to collect data at home as to who in their families are Vets. You captured that perfectly in this packet. I know from past experiences that often my students just have 1 or 2 Vets in their families, if any. So I wondered if you might consider making a bar graph with numbers from 1 to 12 (as an alternate to the current graph where 1 star = 5 people). Thanks so much for sharing a truly remarkable idea!

I so appreciate your suggestions. I will gladly look at the material and revise. Very kind of you! (Thank you for the NEW learning on Veterans.) I can make a bar graph for you and send it via email if you like.
My email is animeadows@gmail.com

Okay, I revised and corrected all the apostrophes! Thank you so much for caring enough to contact me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Thank you SOOO much! You are awesome!!
I would love for them to be each multiple (1-12). We are just about to start multiplication and thought that sticking with the same format would be great!
Thanks again, and just please keep me posted! :-)

Hi Steve2....
I just saw your reply. Sorry. I don't know my way around here yet, and somehow missed it. I am working on them now (conferences are over). I would like to send them to you directly - no cost to you for a great suggestion, and I want to make sure this is what you want. I'm not going to offer this for free on TPT, but would like to for you. I need your email, though. So, let me know. I'm going to make 0-5 individual, and then a mixed. 6 - 8, and then a mix, 9-12 and then a mix.
Hope that works. Did you want division, too?

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have loved teaching since I was a young child, often playing school...with my favorite role being the teacher. I have been teaching for over 20 years, and have a special affection for the primary grades. During this time I have learned and grown so much from my teaching experiences and my students.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Providing hands on experiences, creative approaches, music, poetry, chants, art, and whatever else I can find or create to enrich learning for my students is essential to my teaching style. I also understand the importance of balanced instruction, so you will find a mixture of creativity and structure in my classroom.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

In addition to teaching, I enjoy writing, graphic arts and photography. The visual world is my playground. I have found myself working in graphic design since I was in grade school, and am continuously excited about the doors the digital world keeps opening to me. An opportunity to write and create for TPT is a blessing, and I look forward to what I can share with others.
